Grateful Dead Shakedown Street Lithograph by Gilbert Shelton
Gilbert Shelton, creator of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, brought his particular brand of satirical humor and underground comic sensibility to Dead visual culture. Shelton's work existed in a different register from that of psychedelic poster artists like Wes Wilson or Stanley Mouse. Where they embraced ornament and complexity, Shelton worked with narrative clarity and comic timing.
"Shakedown Street" as subject matter speaks to Dead economics: the informal market that existed outside concert venues where tapes, merchandise, and goods changed hands. Shelton's visualization of this commerce would have contained irony, observation, and his particular brand of social commentary.
This lithograph represents the Dead's visual culture as genuinely diverse, welcoming artistic engagement from multiple traditions and sensibilities.
