Soulive - Flowers (Vinyl LP)
Soulive's first full-length studio album in over a decade and a half finds the soul-jazz trio reconnecting with their signature telepathic interplay at Flóki Studios on Iceland's remote Tröllaskagi Peninsula. Guitarist Eric Krasno, drummer Alan Evans, and keyboardist Neal Evans—the brotherhood that helped define the rare groove revival of the late 1990s—retreat to the edge of the world to remember why they started playing together 26 years ago. The result honors the innovators who built this music while pushing their sound into new territory.
Second single Flowers at Your Feet, featuring Grammy-winning vocalist Van Hunt, pays explicit tribute to Sly Stone, Brian Wilson, George Clinton, Prince, Thelonious Monk, and D'Angelo—artists whose passing (and in D'Angelo's case, recent loss) gave the track additional emotional weight. Hunt described it as his way of saying thank you to the innovators who built this music and to Soulive for keeping the garden alive. The album blends contemplative psych-funk with the hard-hitting boogaloo that made their Bowlive residencies legendary in the jam band community.
Relix has documented Soulive's evolution from their earliest Blue Note appearances through their countless collaborations across the funk and jam scenes. Flowers represents both a return to form and a statement of continued relevance from a trio that helped define 21st-century soul-jazz.
