Altin Gün built their reputation the old-fashioned way, winning over crowds across Europe and North America night after night before most American listeners had ever heard of Anatolian psych-rock. Their approach, weaving Turkish folk repertoire through fuzz-soaked grooves rooted in the tradition of Selda Bağcan and Erkin Koray, has made them one of the most compelling live acts to emerge from the Amsterdam underground in years.
With Ask, the Amsterdam-based sextet Altin Gün marks an exuberant return to the 70s Anatolian folk-rock sound that characterized their first two albums, On (2018) and Gece (2019). It is also the closest the band have come so far to capturing the infectious energy of their live performances. “We took a very traditional approach to recording a rock album, like in the 70s,” bassist Jasper Verhulst says, with the band using vintage recording equipment to give the set a warm, welcoming sound.
