Released in 1986, *Animal Boy* arrived at a moment when the Ramones had every reason to play it safe but chose not to. "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" in particular showed Joey Ramone's willingness to wade into political territory, a direct response to Ronald Reagan's controversial visit to a German military cemetery that year, and it remains one of the sharpest protest songs in the band's catalog.

Possibly one of Ramones most experimental albums, Animal Boy delivered the world "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes To Bitburg)", "Mental Hell" and "Love Kills" and a bunch of synthesizers, an unusual departure from the band's preferred instrumentation on the previous eight albums. Generally considered one of the band's "underrated gems" this album proved the band's playfulness with influences from early rock and pop could be explored within the parameters of The Ramones signature sound while still evolving.
