The project brings together jazz musicians and Allman Brothers family members to explore how songs like "Jessica," "Blue Sky," "Midnight Rider," and "Whipping Post" function as jazz compositions when stripped of distortion and electric power. This double LP release proves the Allman Brothers' material transcends genre boundaries—the melodies, harmonies, and improvisational frameworks work just as effectively with horn sections and upright bass as they do with dual lead guitars.

The big band arrangements emphasize the compositional sophistication that separated the Allman Brothers from jam bands who prioritized improvisation over structure. Dickey Betts' "Jessica" becomes a swinging instrumental showcase, "Blue Sky" reveals its melodic beauty through horn voicings, and "Whipping Post" demonstrates how its complex structure supports extended exploration regardless of instrumentation. The jazz musicians approach the material with reverence while bringing their own improvisational language, creating versions that honor the Allmans while establishing new interpretative possibilities. The production captures both the power of full big band arrangements and the space that allows soloists to shine.

What makes Big Band of Brothers valuable is how it proves the Allman Brothers' lasting impact extends beyond Southern rock and jam band genres. The duo choose 11 relatively obscure covers from classic artists such as Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, and B.B. King that have clearly influenced Allman's musical approach. Like Ashley Kahn and his routinely revelatory and in-depth examinations of John Coltrane and Miles Davis, author Alan Paul has become the resident expert on all things Allman Brothers Band. With that reputation preceding him and affording trusted access, Paul, indeed, finds new things to share, not only about the Brothers’ climb to rock’s peak, but what came before and after.

Paul’s 300-page effort benefits from a trove of never-heard interviews with all of the principal characters- collected and conducted by ABB ‘Tour Mystic,’ Kirk West- making this journey essentially a new one, despite detailing a period of the legendary group when it was at its most visible. Paul understands better than anyone the significance of each step the Brothers took; from birth in 1969, through two tragic deaths, a leadership shift, and an album four years later that made them rock gods. Wisely, though, Paul also carries us through to the downslope; and why success isn’t an unconditional positive.

The album’s creation united a reconfigured band, following the deaths of founders Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, and introduces key replacements, Chuck Leavell, on keyboards, and Lamar Williams, on bass. It also necessitates the rise of Dickey Betts as ensemble leader, furthering a country music influence that began with Betts’ “Blue Sky,” on the preceding Eat a Peach, and produced the band’s chart pinnacle with “Ramblin’ Man.” Paul’s attention to Betts also explores the singer-guitarist’s growing affinity for Jerry Garcia, and the Brothers’ relationship with the Grateful Dead, that never saw more interaction and, perhaps, friendly competition than in ’73.

Paul’s best strength is his knack for striking the balance between the front page and the back- the disintegrating partnership with the Capricorn record label; the fraying interpersonal relationships within the group- over the course of becoming the biggest band in the land. Nothing is off-limits, nor is it mined for salacious effect. It’s candid and, more often than not, coming directly from the individuals, themselves. Brothers and sisters they were. Paul’s book gives us a seat at the table.

No Comments comments associated with this post

— Larson Sutton, jambands.com

Product Details

Released in 1973 in the immediate aftermath of Duane Allman's and Berry Oakley's deaths, Brothers & Sisters marked the band's pivot toward country-inflected grooves and Dickey Betts stepping fully into the songwriting spotlight, delivering both "Ramblin' Man" and "Jessica" in a single stroke. The Brothers mourned Duane, then soldiered on, choosing to continue without replacing Skydog’s iconic guitar and, somewhat by default, passing leadership to his sibling, Gregg. In 1973, that role would shift more definitively to guitarist Dickey Betts, after another tragedy- the accidental death of bassist Berry Oakley in the fall of ‘72- would leaving the remaining four reeling, once again.

So, it’s on this April ’72 date from Syracuse University that the strength of the seminal brotherhood- particularly the vitality of Oakley’s insistent, indomitable bass- powers a band playing not just for Duane, but for their lives. The setlist mirrors almost entirely the repertoire they had solidified a year prior with the ultra-classic, At Fillmore East. Only “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More,” from the freshly-released Eat a Peach, is a newer entry.

Otherwise, the two-disc performance hugs to songs the band had worked out relentlessly on the road since their 1969 inception. Betts takes up for Duane as slide guitarist on the trademark show-opener, “Statesboro Blues,” then, on the remainder, swelters as much or more than he would with a twin-guitar lineup. It’s testimony to how accomplished Betts was as a guitarist- to shine in such a glaring absence.

Oakley continues to excite with his rolling thunder; and as this FM radio-taped appearance chose to mix the group-with Oakley hard in the left channel; Betts hard to the right-his bass registers an even more apparent and full-bodied impression. Gregg is anguished and pure as one of the finest bluesmen of any generation, bolstered by the tireless twin drumming of Butch Trucks and Jaimoe. Extended pieces such as “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and “Whipping Post” are understandably different without Duane, but no less dramatic, affecting, and long.

In 1973, Betts expanded his influence as an integral songwriter and vocalist, essentially leading a newly-configured, six-piece ABB on its most successful album, Brothers and Sisters, welcoming Lamar Williams and Chuck Leavell to the family. It has been remastered from original analog tapes by Keven Reeves to 192kHz 24-bit audio and then cut on copper plates using Abbey Road Mastering's Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) lathe. The original artwork has been faithfully reproduced. Idlewild South is the second studio album by The Allman Brothers Band. Produced by Tom Dowd, the album was released on September 23, 1970. Following the release of their 1969 debut, The Allman Brothers Band toured the United States extensively to promote the album, which had little commercial success. Their performances, however, did create positive word of mouth exposure that extended to more famous musicians, such as Eric Clapton, who invited group leader Duane Allman to contribute to his 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. As a result of the band's relentless touring schedule, Idlewild South was recorded gradually over a period of five months in various cities, including New York, Miami, and Macon, Georgia, the band's home. Tom Dowd had previously been sought to record the group's debut but had been unavailable. The material presented on Idlewild South was written during this period and tested out on the road at shows. The album's title comes from the band's nickname for a rustic cabin the band rented out and used for rehearsals, as well as parties. Idlewild South contains two of the band's best-known songs, "Midnight Rider" (later a hit for various artists) and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", which became one of the band's famous concert numbers.

Tracklist

Side A

1. Revival (4:06)

2. Don't Keep Me Wonderin' (3:31)

3. Midnight Rider (3:00)

4. In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed (6:59)

Side B

1. Hoochie Coochie Man (4:58)

2. Please Call Home (4:02)

3. Leave My Blues At Home (4:18)

UPC: 602547813237
Label: Mercury
Release Date: 7.22.16
Format: LP Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/packshot-the-allman-brothers-band-idlewild-south-180-gram-lp-vinyl-vinyl-lp-relix.jpg?v=1777459186
allman-brothers-final-concert-10-28-14-cd
The Allman Brothers Band – Final Concert, 10/28/14 (3-CD)

Review

There is an especially poignant photo in the modest booklet that accompanies this three-CD set honoring the final concert of The Allman Brothers Band. It’s a black-and-white picture of three remaining founding members- Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe; (co-founder Dickey Betts was not in this lineup). In a simple, humble snapshot that respectfully accentuates the greying of this trio of aged musicians, we see 55 years of the road coming to a dignified and gracious close at the group’s home away from home, onstage at the Beacon Theatre.

The passing, in 2017, of Allman and Trucks all but guaranteed that this performance in October of 2014 was, indeed, the last one. The band, at the time, suspected it could be, announcing it would be the culminating event, and delivered one of its longest shows ever, covering the breadth of the Brothers career- from seminal blues to ethereal, jazz-infused instrumental bliss to brilliant songcraft. It also came with the plenty of the unexpected.

“Little Martha” had been, for years, cast as pre-recorded walk-out music; the studio version playing as the house lights came up at the end of the night. Instead, here it is a starter, executed delicately by guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, leading into a surprising and ferocious “Mountain Jam” that would also reprise three hours later. Too, the beginning was the end, with a “Trouble No More” finale; the Muddy Waters cover and first song the band every played, back in 1969, bookending over five decades. In between, it was an Allman Brothers Band concert like no other.

This refurbished, 10th anniversary collection has been dressed up a bit; remastered, and with the new, aforementioned booklet that includes a touching and reflective essay by the longtime ABB archivist John Lynskey. The sonics on the trio of discs are fantastically robust and immediate- to the point that the rabid, supportive remarks of some of the NYC faithful are caught clearly on mic- putting the listener in the front row of the Beacon. As for the show itself, it’s indicative of what was so impressive about this particular unit.

Allman’s voice, through its chipping patina, still grabs, hold and haunts. Trucks and Jaimoe, augmented by percussionist Marc Quinones, roll down the tracks with a full belly of steam. Oteil Burbridge’s bass work is peerless. And the guitar duo of Haynes and Derek Trucks comes closest to the impossible- equaling the majestic six-string symbiosis of Betts and Duane Allman.

Make no mistake, this is no requiem. It’s an image that aligns well with the timing of the recording- a mid-May date in 1984 in the nation’s capital- as it’s squarely between the fade-out of the Brothers and the gestation of the Gregg Allman Band’s 1987 hit album, I’m No Angel. As such, this concert appearance hints at things to come on a few original entries, while also nodding to Allman’s illustrious past, spotlighting a unique GAB lineup that dazzles with a handful of flammable twin-guitar outbursts.

Four decades ago, Allman was back in the clubs, following the Allman Brothers Band’s then-last hurrah as an arena touring mainstay; unfortunately, more a gassed-out remnant of its fiery, blues-driven days as the biggest band in the country. In the wake of the Brothers’ dissolution, Allman took along latter-years ABB alum- siblings Dan and Frankie Toler, on guitar and drums, respectively- and teamed them with an ensemble, including guitarist Bruce Waibel (who would later shift to GAB bassist), that would solidify his solo intentions and remain tight through the ‘80s. With a mission to recapture the heat, Allman and his six hit the road, without an album to support, debuting new songs amongst the classics.

At The Bayou in DC, Allman wasted no time appealing to the sold-out house, launching with a brawny “Dreams,” then peppered in other Allman Brothers Band faves along the way. Still, shouldered next to “Hot ‘Lanta,” “Melissa,” or “Statesboro Blues,” there was a “Yours for the Asking,” or “Faces Without Names”- the latter two cuts eventually showing up on I’m No Angel. Whether fresh or famed, Allman set alight the repertoire with his immortal, highway-tested vocal, aided well by the gymnastic six-string work of Toler and Waibel. No better an example of the group’s developing interplay is “Matthew’s Arrival,” that stretches out in every direction, showing off the deft skill of the sextet backing Allman. It’s a wonder that Waibel would move to the bass chair, as his playing here is particularly captivating, and a motivating factor, among many, to add this historic performance to any collection.

33 Comments comments associated with this post

[] There you can find 25135 more Information on that Topic: Allman had weathered enough storms to fill a dozen careers, and the band he was leading through clubs and theaters that year reflected a road-hardened Southern soul that had nothing left to prove. This Washington, D.C. show catches him in that particular sweet spot, loose and commanding, drawing from the deep well of Allman Brothers classics alongside the solo work that proved he was never just a sideman in his own story.

One Night in DC captures the energy and spirit of the mid-80s Gregg Allman Band.
