Cuban-born Rubalcaba came up steeped in the Havana tradition, shaped by his grandfather's charanga bands and a classical conservatory foundation before Dizzy Gillespie famously championed him to international audiences in the late 1980s. That breadth, spanning Afro-Cuban roots, classical rigor, and post-bop fluency, is exactly what makes the solo piano format such a revealing setting for him; nothing between the listener and the music but eighty-eight keys.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba returns to center stage with the release of his first major label solo recording, simply entitled, SOLO. His ninth recording for Blue Note Records, SOLO, solidifies his position as one of the finest pianists of his, or any, generation.
