Product Details

Mobley spent much of his career unfairly overshadowed by Coltrane and Rollins, but hard bop devotees have always known the truth: his tone was warm where others were fierce, and his melodic logic was something entirely his own. Roll Call arrived at a peak moment of Blue Note's storied run on West 63rd Street, when Rudy Van Gelder's studio was capturing some of the most alive small-group jazz ever committed to tape.

Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley was on a serious roll when he recorded his 1960 album Roll Call, the follow-up to his classic Soul Station, which reconvened the same rhythm section of pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Blakey, with the addition of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet for an invigorating 6-song hard bop masterclass. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
