The Legendary Guitar Player Who Inspired Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Johnny Winter had a unique career plan: to make music. The lightning-fast guitarist fulfilled this wish magnificently, decade after decade, becoming one of the most respected singers and guitarists in rock. From the Sixties onwards, Winter was the unofficial torchbearer of the blues, standing up for his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker and promoting their careers. A musical prodigy, he grew up in Beaumont, Texas, on a diet of blues and rock 'n' roll. As a teenager, he hitchhiked to Louisiana almost every weekend to play in small nightclubs. After a short stay in college, he gave up his academic career and devoted himself to making music. This is the first collection of the "early years" to distinguish between the formative blues roots and the advance to the rock idiom. It is the best forerunner of his breakout record, "The Progressive Blues Experiment" and the "Johnny Winter" album. Since their Grammy nominated debut album in 2000 they have toured the world, shared the stage with countless legends, Mavis Staples, Robert Plant, John Hiatt, the Allman Brothers, Buddy Guy, Snoop Dogg, and Phil Lesh to name a few, while earning multiple Grammy nominations for their experimental albums of Psychedelic folk roots rock.

“Still Shakin’ is a celebration of their life-changing first album Shake Hands with Shorty, released 25 years ago. Their albums meld music to come but are always a snapshot of who they are running with presently. That to say, Ray Ray and Joey have enriched NMA’s music for the last few years and they cherish their contributions to Still Shakin’. They brought in Mavis Staples to sing on the cover and it's a seriously rousing, funky, glorious affair—one of those tunes you could play over and over and never tire of. At some point while replaying it, though, you remember that there are 11 other tracks on the new album that also rock and roll with the same level of gutsiness and energy and, really, any of them will do the trick when you just need a reminder that real soul is still out there. Some of the tunes, like "Mean Old World," also feature guests, in this case Duane Betts and Jason Isbell, and it, too, is real and gritty—just the kind of antidote you'd want if you're having a shitty day. Some others, like "Drunk Outdoors" and "Bump That Mother," require nothing more from a listener than the desire to have a little fun, while "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," one of a pair of tracks featuring Mississippi bluesman Cedric Burnside, burns with gospel fervor. The songs and stories originate in two neighboring rural counties. The cast of characters includes four families of Mississippi musicians, three generations deep, and a photographer from Texas.' - Luther Dickinson In 2017, Wyatt McSpadden found an old roll of film and tracked down members of North Mississippi Allstars to share his forgotten photographs. The images were so profound and so beautiful that they would come to inspire the latest recording, Up And Rolling. The images inspired the band to ask, 'What did the music sound like that night in 96? What does Mississippi music sound like now? What would ideally be on the push button AM/FM radio as we drove thru the hills?' The North Mississippi Allstars would return to the famous Zebra Ranch to record Up And Rolling, inspired by Wyatt's images. They gathered together, trimmed back the wisteria, and swept out the converted barn recording studio. The fired up the tube amps and old computers and began conjuring up modern Mississippi music, ancient and futuristic all at once. Telling it how it was and how they think it should be. The Rockpalast stage in Cologne was one of Europe's premier showcases for American blues and rock, and this performance captures him in front of an audience that understood precisely what they were witnessing.

Paul Butterfield had developed the blues feel of his unique blues harp, working with blues giants such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter. Together with the Paul Butterfield Bluesband, founded in 1965, "Butter" was the white ambassador of the black Chicago blues. He had played on the third day of the Woodstock festival (1969), at the time already accompanied by guitarist Buzzy Feiten, who was also with him at the Rockpalast performance. And Paul had been instrumental in shocking the folk audience at Newport (1965) with electric blues rock sounds, which delighted Bob Dylan to such an extent that he asked members of the band to accompany him at the festival. We remembered Paul Butterfield from his involvement in The Last Waltz, The Bands's farewell performance (1976), having presented the film in the documentary section of the WDR Rockpalast program. He brought a young band to the Rockpalast night in Essen. His second guitarist, Peter Atanasoff, was just 19. The disciple of the great blues masters had become a mentor to a whole new generation of musicians. We met Peter again many years later, performing with Tito & Tarantula at our open-air festival at the Loreley on the river Rhine in 1998. Paul Butterfield: born 1942 in Chicago, died in Hollywood in 1987. Inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame in 2006. Howlin' Wolf was one of the most charismatic and exciting performers in the history of blues music. Standing six feet three inches he was a mountain of a man whose menacing vocal and low down 'n' dirty delivery greatly influenced a whole generation of rockers who followed. Born Chester Burnett, Wolf was one of the most important and influential figures in Chicago Blues through the 1950s. Rougher-edged than Muddy Waters, the intensity of Wolf's performance prompted Sun Records impresario, Sam Phillips, to observe: When I heard Howlin' Wolf, I said: 'This is for me. This is where the soul of man never dies'. This 16-track LP features the bluesman's best-loved songs from the first decade or more of his recording career, comprising songs from his 1951 debut recording for Phillips in Memphis, through to 1962 by which time commercial blues had become focused on the middle-class, white student market as much as it's traditional black roots. This great-value 52-track 2-CD set comprises all her A & B sides during those first important years of her career, plus a bonus album version of "Dance With Me Henry", so it's a comprehensive overview of her early work.

Tracklist

Disc 1

1. The Wallflower (Roll With Me Henry)

2. Hold Me Squeeze Me

3. Hey Henry

4. Be Mine

5. Good Rockin Daddy

6. Crazy Feeling

7. W-O-M-A-N

8. That's All

9. Number One

10. I'm A Fool

11. Tears Of Joy

12. Shortenin' Bread Rock

13. Tough Lover

14. Fools We Mortals Be

15. Good Lookin'

16. Then I'll Care

17. Market Place

18. The Pick-Up

19. By The Light Of The Silvery Moon

20. Come What May

21. Sunshine Of Love

22. Baby, Baby Every Night

23. I Hope You're Satisfied

24. If It Ain't One Thing

25. How Big A Fool

26. If I Can't Have You

Disc 2

1. My Heart Cries

2. Spoonful

3. It's A Crying Shame

4. All I Could Do Was Cry

5. Boy Of My Dreams

6. My Dearest Darling

7. Tough Mary

8. At Last

9. I Just Want To Make Love To You

10. Trust In Me

11. Anything To Say You're Mine

12. Fool That I Am

13. Dream

14. Don't Cry, Baby

15. Sunday Kind Of Love

16. It's Too Soon To Know

17. Seven Day Fool

18. Something's Got A Hold On Me

19. Waiting For Charlie To Come Home

20. Stop The Wedding

21. Street Of Tears

22. Next Door To The Blues

23. Fools Rush In

24. How Do You Speak To An Angel

25. Would It Make Any Difference To You

26. Dance With Me Henry

UPC: 824046320423
Label: Acrobat
Release Date: 8.4.17
Format: CD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/packshot-etta-james-complete-as-bs-1955-62-cd-relix.jpg?v=1779370235
robert-randolph-preacher-kids-with-booklet-cd
Robert Randolph – Preacher Kids (CD)

Robert Randolph's roots run deep in the Sacred Steel tradition, the Holy Ghost-filled guitar church music that shaped players like the Campbell Brothers and Calvin Cooke before Randolph brought that sound out of the House of God sanctuary and onto festival stages worldwide. Special guests include, The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell, fast rising roots rocker Marcus King, Americana icon Buddy Miller, Scarlet Rivera of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review, Chicago blues guitar mainstay Melvin Taylor and Hawaiian ukulele star Jake Shimabukuro. Also on hand are Mayall's longtime dynamic Chicago rhythm section of Greg Rzab on bass guitar and Jay Davenport on drums with Austin's multi-talented and charismatic Carolyn Wonderland on guitar. Recorded at Robby Krieger's (The Doors) Horse Latitudes studio with Grammy nominated Producer Eric Corne, The Sun is Shining Down is Mayall's 5th studio album for Forty Below Records, a fruitful partnership that began with 2014's A Special Life. "I couldn't be happier with the new record," exclaims Mayall. "I can't wait to share it with my fans. Each one of these special guests brings something unique to the album and our team works so well together. I think you can hear that chemistry in the music," raves Mayall. The album explores a range of styles and eclectic instruments. Scarlet Rivera's violin beautifully compliments two Mayall originals, the timely "Got to Find a Better Way" and a spirited reboot of the Mayall classic "Deep Blue Sea". Mike Campbell sounds like a natural born Bluesbreaker on the funky Bernard Allison cut "Chills and Thrills" and Marcus King sizzles throughout the soulful "Can't Take No More," another Mayall original. Buddy Miller's baritone tremolo guitar adds a unique and memorable flair to the Bobby Rush composition "I'm as Good as Gone", while Jake Shimabukuro's electric ukulele is nothing short of astonishing on "One Special Lady". Melvin Taylor proves why he's been wowing Chicago blues audiences for decades on "Hungry and Ready" and "Driving Wheel" and Carolyn Wonderland brilliantly concludes the record with a sensitive moving performance on the title track. As significant as each of these guest turns is, however, they can't overshadow Mayall's own spirited vocals, iconic harmonica and lyrical keyboard work on The Sun is Shining Down. "John shines throughout this album, exuding a joy and gratitude that are infectious.
