Dylan in 1994 was in a curious place, deep into his Never-Ending Tour and still years away from the commercial and critical resurgence that "Time Out of Mind" would bring. The stripped-down setting pushed him back toward the songs that defined a generation, and his weathered, road-worn delivery gave classics like "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and "Like a Rolling Stone" a weight they hadn't carried in years.
MTV Unplugged is a live album by Bob Dylan, released in 1995 by Columbia Records (reissued in 2007 by Sony). It documents Dylan's appearance on the then-highly popular MTV Unplugged television series, recorded at Sony Music Studios in New York on November 17 and 18, 1994. It gave Dylan his best sales in years, reaching US #23 and going gold, while hitting #10 in the UK. The singer-songwriter had originally wanted to do a set of traditional folk songs. At MTV's behest, he instead performed mostly classics from his early albums.
