Released in 1973, this is the record where Dylan stepped fully into the American mythological landscape, scoring Peckinpah's revisionist Western with spare, dusty arrangements that felt less like a Hollywood commission and more like a natural extension of his own folk and country roots. "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" has since taken on a life far beyond the film, but the quieter instrumental pieces here reward the patient listener with a cinematic intimacy that Dylan rarely revisited.
