On this album, Lund took a turn from his previous writing topics and settled on one theme for this record: historical military songs. \"The Horse Soldier album apparently came out of left field for people,\" said Lund. \"We had just come off two straight gold records which both surprised me in terms of their commercial success. I'm really proud of sticking to my guns and releasing this album just how I envisioned it because to this day I have people tell me all the time that of all our records this is their favourite.
