The early years were dedicated to jazz, Dave Brubeck, Cal Tjader, Vince Guaraldi, and a generation of West Coast players who were making some of the most inventive music of the postwar era. Fantasy was also the first label to record Lenny Bruce's live performances, which tells you something about the kind of operation they were running.

The label changed dramatically in 1967 when Saul Zaentz took ownership and brought with him a Bay Area band he was managing called Creedence Clearwater Revival. What CCR did over the following five years under the Fantasy banner remains one of the most concentrated runs of hit-making in rock history. Bad Moon Rising, Proud Mary, Fortunate Son, Green River, Have You Ever Seen the Rain, Lodi, the whole catalog, all of it recorded and released here. The band broke up in 1972 but the catalog never stopped selling, and the Fantasy CCR releases remain definitive.

Fantasy was eventually acquired by Concord Records in 2004, bringing its catalog under one of the more serious independent umbrellas in the business. Lukas Nelson has spent years absorbing influences from his father Willie on down through Americana, rock, and soul, and these stripped-down sessions let that musical DNA breathe without the weight of production.

When we walked out of Shangri-La recording studio on the sixth day, we knew we had captured something special. The process had been simple: we would gather around a coffee table on the lawn, Lukas would present a new song on an acoustic guitar, and then we’d go inside and roll tape. The atmosphere was joyful and mellow, yet intensely productive—we rarely spent more than two takes on a song before moving on to the next one. It was so productive, in fact, that there was simply no way to fit all the material on one release. So think of this project as something of an epilogue to our previous album, Turn Off The News (Build A Garden). Some of these tracks are alternate performances of songs from that record. Others, like “Bad Case”, appear in their early developmental stages. But the majority of this album comprises songs that, for one reason or another, didn’t make the final cut, and yet were just too special to keep to ourselves. Some strings are out of tune. Some lyrics are inconsistent. There’s microphone bleed, tape machine buzz, conversations and laughter between takes… that’s how we like it. Our hope is that Naked Garden offers a glimpse behind the curtain, at POTR in our most raw, honest, and naked state. For our band’s name is truly our mantra, and if nothing else, this project is an attempt to make good on our promise.

Tracklist

1. Entirely Different Stars

2. Civilized Hell (Alternate Version)

3. Back When I Cared

4. Movie In My Mind

5. Focus On The Music

6. My Own Wave

7. Fade To Black

8. Out In L.A. When fall arrived, he performed more solo shows along with releasing his fourth solo studio effort, Million Voices Whisper. A lighter touch that permeates the material differentiates what Haynes does when he leads the Mule versus tackling a project on his own. While Mule pushes forward with a blues and classic rock-based hefty force, Haynes by himself accentuates his soul side alongside those other influences, which shines throughout the album's 11 tracks.

That's immediately evident on the opening numbers that begin with "These Changes" — one of four songs that feature guest duties by Derek Trucks – "Go Down Swinging," "You Ain't Above Me" and "This Life As We Know It." There's a brightness to the guitar tone and a nimbleness to these tracks that's reminiscent of how Jerry Garcia's solo performances were frequently viewed as going to church. "Life" offers Warren's message of positive change starts within and then extends to the world. Later, on "Hall of Future Saints," Haynes namechecks numerous legendary musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Miles Davis and John Coltrane in deference to their contributions and paving the way so someone like him is able to build a lifelong mission dedicated to music. The Black Keys frontman leaves his fingerprints all over El Dorado, producing the LP at his Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, co-writing each song with King and playing on nearly every track. The album marks King's third collaboration with a big-name producer: Gov't Mule's Warren Haynes helmed 2016's The Marcus King Band and Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton) oversaw 2018's Carolina Confessions. Auerbach—along with a rotating roster of session musicians, in lieu of King's eponymous touring band— may have had the biggest impact yet, giving El Dorado a sound more akin to the countrified, '70s soul of Auerbach's two solo albums, 2009's Keep It Hid and 2017's Waiting on a Song, than King's prior records. And though King delivers a ripping solo on "Say You Will," El Dorado is the first of his albums to put the focus firmly on his voice, particularly "Beautiful Stranger," "Wildflowers & Wine" and "Love Song," a trio of seductive, countrified slow-burns. In many ways, this is his Willie Nelson album, something King winks at on the steel guitar-driven "Too Much Whiskey," which namechecks "Whiskey River," and "Shotgun Willie" before climaxing with a solo that would make Nelson himself proud.

— Rudi Greenberg, Relix

Product Details

Raised in Greenville, South Carolina, King came up steeped in Southern rock and blues, leading his own band as a teenager before his guitar playing and raw vocal power caught wider attention on the festival circuit.
