Stand! Is the pinnacle of Sly & the Family Stone's early work, a record that represents a culmination of the group's musical vision and accomplishment. Music journalists have often hinted at this record's boundless enthusiasm and blurred stylistic boundaries, yet everything simply gels here, resulting in no separation between the astounding Funk, effervescent irresistible melodies, psychedelicized guitars, and deep rhythms. Add to this a sharpened sense of Pop song craft, elastic band interplay, and a flowering of Sly's social conscious, and the result is utterly stunning. 13 tracks including 'I Want to Take You Higher', 'Sing a Simple Song' and 'Everyday People'. The First Family: Live at Winchester Cathedral 1967 is an unprecedented live performance by the original Family Stone line-up, recorded just prior to their signing to Epic Records, and a full year before their chart breakthrough with 'Dance To The Music.' This fascinating recording explicates Sly Stone’s genius on a tremendously exciting and atmospheric set of vintage soul covers, peppered with the arrangements, motifs and intoxicating energy that would soon become familiar during the group’s ascent. Interest in Sly is high with the forthcoming documentary directed by Questlove, but to experience the full impact of the Family Stone’s legendary abilities from the start, this historic document is required listening.

Tracklist

I Ain't Got Nobody (For Real)

Skate Now

Show Me

What Is Soul?

I Can't Turn You Loose

Baby I Need Your Lovin'

Pucker Up Buttercup

Saint James Infirmary

I Gotta Go Now (Up On The Floor) / Funky Broadway

UPC: 638126751546
Label: High Moon Records
Release Date: 7.18.25
Format: CD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/Sly-The-Family-Stone-The-First-Family-Live-at-Winchester-Cathedral-1967-Deluxe-Foil-Digipak-w-Bonus-track-and-52-Page-Book-CD.jpg?v=1777378814
mavis-staples-mavis-staples-ill-take-you-there-an-all-star-concert-celebration-cd
Mavis Staples – Mavis Staples I'll Take You There: An All-star Concert Celebration (CD)

Mavis Staples came up singing gospel with her family's group in Chicago, and her voice has carried the weight of American struggle and joy ever since. When Mavis Staples walked into that room in 2011, she brought with her the full weight of the Staple Singers' civil rights legacy, a voice that had moved marchers and presidents alike. What happened next sat unreleased for over a decade, which makes finally hearing it feel like finding something precious that was always meant to reach you.

Iconic singer Mavis Staples is an alchemist of American music, and during her 70+ year career one of her most beloved musical moments was her riveting performance in Martin Scorsese's film' The Last Waltz,' performing "The Weight", with The Band, a moment that forged a life-long friendship between her and Levon Helm. Staples came to Woodstock, NY to perform as part of Helm's renowned Midnight Ramble series, and the ensuing concert-available now for the first time on the rousing new ANTI- Records release 'Carry Me Home'-would mark a personal high watermark for both artists. Captured live in the summer of 2011, 'Carry Me Home' showcases two of the past century's most iconic voices coming together in love and joy, tracing their shared roots and celebrating the enduring power of faith and music. The setlist was righteous that night, mixing vintage gospel and soul with timeless folk and blues, and the performances were loose and playful, fueled by an ecstatic atmosphere that was equal parts family reunion and tent revival. Read between the lines, though, and there's an even more poignant story at play here. Neither Staples nor Helm knew that this would be their last performance together-the collection marks one of Helm's final recordings before his death-and listening back now, a little more than a decade later, tunes like "This May Be The Last Time" and "Farther Along" take on new, bittersweet meaning. The result is an album that's at once a time capsule and a memorial, a blissful homecoming and a fond farewell, a once-in-a-lifetime concert-and friendship-preserved for the ages. Staples and the night's soulful crew of backup singers handle the vast majority of the vocal work here, but it's perhaps album closer "The Weight," which features Helm chiming in with lead vocals for the first time, that stands as the concert's most emotional moment."It never crossed my mind that it might be the last time we'd see each other," says Staples. "He was so full of life and so happy that week. He was the same old Levon I'd always known, just a beautiful spirit inside and out." "My dad built The Midnight Rambles to restore his spirit, his voice, and his livelihood," says Helm's daughter, Amy, who sang backup vocals with her father and Staples at their performance. "He'd risen back up from all that had laid him down, and to have Mavis come sing and sanctify that stage was the ultimate triumph for him."

Tracklist

1. This Is My Country

2. Trouble In My Mind

3. Farther Along

4. Hand Writing On The Wall

5. I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free

6. Move Along Train

7. This May Be The Last Time

8. When I Go Away

9. Wide River To Cross

10. You Got To Move

11. You Got To Serve Somebody

12. The Weight

UPC: 045778785926
Label: Anti
Release Date: 5.20.22
Format: CD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/Mavis-Staples-Levon-Helm-Carry-Me-Home-CD.png?v=1777379697
mavis-staples-have-a-little-faith-cd
Mavis Staples – Have a Little Faith (CD)

Mavis Staples was raised in the tradition, singing alongside her father Pops Staples and siblings in the Staple Singers, whose recordings for Stax made gospel and soul inseparable for generations of listeners. Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter Jr., and Zigaboo Modeliste locked in together the way only a band can when every member has spent years learning to listen as hard as they play. New Orleans funk rarely translated to tape the way it did on a bandstand, which makes documents like this one genuinely rare.

Widely hailed as the founding fathers of funk, The Meters laid down the blueprint for groove-heavy music that still echoes through hip-hop, rock, and soul today. With razor-sharp rhythm, swampy New Orleans flavor, and a sound tighter than a snare drum, they turned instrumental jams into seismic statements. Whether backing legends like Dr. John or spinning out classics like "Cissy Strut," The Meters didn't just play funk - they defined it. One of New Orleans greatest bands was The Meters, which put the Big Easy on the map as a funk and R&B capital in the 1960s and '70s. The group began as an instrumental quartet, cutting eight studio albums between 1969 and 1977. Although they were never officially captured live on record during that time, in 1981 after the group had split, an obscure label called REG Associates released an LP called At Rozy's which presented a performance supposedly taped at a New Orleans nightclub in December 1976. Recent research, however, reveals that the concert was recorded the previous year at a different venue: San Francisco's prestigious The Great American Music Hall. Newly remastered from the original ¼"master tapes, the performance-including material not heard before-is now presented in full for the first time. It captures The Meters in their prime, giving the listener a front-row seat to witness up close one of the most dynamic funk and soul bands ever.Press "play" and prepare, as Art Neville states mid-way through the gig, to be Meterized!

UPC: 780627371126
Label: Sing
Release Date: 10.17.25
Format: CD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/packshot-the-meters-live-at-the-great-american-music-hall-cd-relix.jpg?v=1777564752
lettuce-cook-cd
Lettuce – Cook (CD)

Review

If you are tempted to make food analogies about Lettuce's 10th studio album, Cook, then you are not alone. The funk sextet, with a unique leafy name to accompany their patented funk sound, created their latest project with the culinary arts very much at the forefront, signaling that music and food are intertwined. Much like following a recipe to create a meal, the right mixture of ingredients can make or break the sound of an album. After three decades together, the combo's current lineup—Adam Deitch (drums, percussion), Adam Smirnoff (guitar), Erick Coomes (bass), Ryan Zoidis (sax, synths), Eric Bloom (trumpet, horns) and Nigel Hall (vocals, clarinet, and keyboards)—dish a generous dose of flavorful offerings, drawing the listener to the table. With the studio as the kitchen, the album is a full-bodied tasting menu of funk, soul, jazz, rock and hip-hop. Cleverly divided into four parts, brief 30 to 40 second interludes titled Sesshins are offered as palette cleansers between courses. Each of the mini tracks prepare the listeners' ear for the new sounds to follow. Lettuce even plays around with serving different "cuisines," with the Middle-Eastern flavored 7 Tribes and the Latin-infused The Matador. Rising to the Top, originally recorded by musician Keni Burke, is a nod to the 80's R&B influences that shape the band's sound while The Mac is a spirited homage to famed sax player Maceo Parker, with whom the band has collaborated with in the past. The album has been certified platinum in the US and gold in the UK and Canada. Earth, Wind & Fire went down in history as one of the top soul/funk bands of the 1970's, selling millions of albums and headlining stadiums and coliseums all over the world. It's hard to imagine the 1970's without "Shining Star," "Fantasy," "Reasons," "September," "Boogie Wonderland" and many other gems that took both R&B radio and pop/Top 40 radio by storm during that decade. Part of Raise!'s success can be attributed to the single "Let's Groove," an infectious funk/dance gem that soared to #1 R&B, #3 Pop and #3 Dance/Club on the Billboard in the United States and was also a #3 Pop smash in the UK. Raise! is a diverse album, ranging from the exuberant funk of "Lady Sun," "You Are a Winner" and "Evolution Orange" to comfortable medium-tempo grooves such as "My Love" and the single "Wanna Be With You." Meanwhile, on "The Changing Times," EWF favors up-tempo Funk with a Rock edge. Thirty four years after the album's release, "Let's Groove" continues to be one of the hits that EWF are best known for. No less than 46 years have passed since White founded the first lineup of EWF, who were originally called the Salty Peppers. White had been overseeing EWF for 12 years when Raise! came out, and when one looks back on the band's long and impressive history, it is evident that 1981 was a very productive year for Earth, Wind & Fire.

Tracklist

Disc 1

1. Let's Groove (5:36)

2. Lady Sun (3:39)

3. My Love (4:33)

4. Evolution Orange (4:37)

5. Kalimba Tree (0:25)

6. You Are A Winner (4:09)

7. I've Had Enough (4:34)

8. Wanna Be With You (4:35)

9. The Changing Times (5:54)

Bonus Tracks

1. Wanna Be With You (Single Version) (3:55)

2. Kalimba Tree (12" Version Long Version) (3:57)

3. Let's Groove (Special Remixed Holiday Version) (6:50)

4. Let's Groove (Single Version) (3:55)

5. Let's Groove (Instrumental) (3:55)

6. I've Had Enough (7" Version) (3:51)

7. The Changing Times (7" Version) (4:50)

UPC: 5060196464098
Label: Funkytown Grooves
Release Date: 9.29.17
Format: CD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/packshot-earth-wind-fire-raise-bonus-tracks-exp-cd-cd-relix.jpg?v=1779372183
earth-wind-fire-earth-wind-fire-greatest-hits-cd
Earth, Wind & Fire – Greatest Hits (CD)

Maurice White built Earth, Wind & Fire into one of the most cosmically ambitious bands in American music history, fusing funk, jazz, gospel, and Afrobeat into something that transcended genre entirely. A variety of R&B, ranging from hip-hop to new wave rock to the electronic synth-pop. Originally released by Columbia Records/CBS Records, the release contained the funky "Sweet Sassy Lady" to the ballads "Could It Be Right" and "We're Living in Our Own Time," an experimental mood prevails on this album. One of the people who helped EWF achieve a more new waveish, synth-pop-influenced sound on Electric Universe was British songwriter Martin Page, who wrote "Magnetic," co-wrote "Spirit Of A New World," "Electric Nation" and wrote "Touch" with Jon Lind, who co-wrote EWF's 1979 smash "Boogie Wonderland." In 1983, the times were clearly a-changin' for R&B-and with Electric Universe, there was no doubt that Earth, Wind & Fire were determined to forge ahead.

Tracklist

Disc 1

1. Magnetic (4:19)

2. Touch (4:54)

3. Moonwalk (4:08)

4. Could It Be Right (5:15)

5. Spirit Of A New World (4:29)

6. Sweet Sassy Lady (4:08)

7. We're Living In Our Own Time (5:18)

8. Electric Nation (4:30)

Bonus Tracks

1. Magnetic (7" Version) (3:50)

2. Magnetic (Extended Dance Remix) (6:22)

3. Magnetic (Instrumental) (5:49)

4. Spirit Of A New World (Demo Version) (4:36)

5. El Solitario (We're Living In Our Own Time) (Demo Version) (5:15)

6. Here's To Love (Instrumental) (4:23)

7. Club Foot (3:59)

8. Milky Way (5:25)

UPC: 810736021725
Label: Funkytown Grooves
Release Date: 9.29.17
Format: CD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/packshot-earth-wind-fire-electric-universe-cd-relix.jpg?v=1779372328
earth-wind-fire-earth-wind-fire-cd
Earth, Wind & Fire – Earth Wind & Fire (CD)

Maurice White assembled Earth, Wind & Fire in Chicago in 1970, drawing on his background as a session drummer at Chess Records and his deep roots in gospel and jazz.
