The self-titled debut arrived in March 1967, recorded in just four days and released on Warner Bros., capturing a band that had already been road-tested through the Acid Tests and the Haight-Ashbury scene. What those Vancouver recordings reveal is a setlist still leaning hard on covers, the electric jug band DNA that Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions had planted, and a looseness that the studio would soon tighten into something more deliberate.

The Grateful Dead's self-titled debut album, celebrating its 50th anniversary with a deluxe 2-CD set. Disc 1 features the original 1967 album, newly remastered. Disc 2 presents the previously unreleased complete show from P.N.E. Garden Auditorium, Vancouver, BC on July 29th, 1966 — one of the earliest known recordings of the band — plus four additional tracks from the following night at the same venue.

The Vancouver recordings capture the Grateful Dead in their rawest form: a young band still steeped in blues, jug band music, and early rock and roll, months before they entered the studio to record their debut. A remarkable document of where it all began.
