Jerry Garcia & David Grisman – So What (2-LP Vinyl)
Product Details
Recorded in the early 1990s and held back for years before its 1998 release, this session captures Garcia and Grisman deep in a shared musical conversation that had been ongoing since their bluegrass days together in the late 1960s. Garcia's fluid, unhurried approach to the jazz standard repertoire here reveals an improvisational vocabulary that his Grateful Dead work only hinted at, rooted in a lifetime of listening to and loving the music of Miles Davis and Milt Jackson.
So What is an acoustic jazz album by Jerry Garcia and mandolinist David Grisman, originally released on Grisman's Acoustic Disc label in August 1998. Garcia and Grisman were friends and collaborators for over three decades, with Grisman's playing famously featured on the classic Grateful Dead album American Beauty.
Joined by sidemen from Grisman's regular band — bassist Jim Kerwin, Joe Craven on percussion, and flutist Matt Eakle on two tracks — the co-leaders perform three versions of Miles Davis' "So What," two each of Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove" and Davis' "Milestones," and one of Grisman's own "16/16." A rare opportunity to hear Garcia playing straight-ahead jazz — a genre he loved but rarely performed on record.
Now on vinyl for its 25th anniversary as a double LP, the set includes two bonus tracks and is housed in a gatefold jacket featuring original artwork by Garcia himself.
