Product Details

By 1976, the Jerry Garcia Band had settled into a sound that was distinctly its own, separate from the Dead's cosmic sprawl, rooted in R&B, gospel, and the kind of intimate interplay that small venues like Sophie's made possible. Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux's presence here is bittersweet in hindsight; their chemistry with Garcia in this setting remains one of the most underappreciated chapters in the whole extended Garcia story. That Betty Cantor-Jackson had her recorder running that night is something to be genuinely grateful for.

A genuine vault discovery, GarciaLive Volume Seven presents the complete November 8, 1976 performance by the Jerry Garcia Band at Sophie's in Palo Alto, California — recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson on original soundboard reels that were nearly lost forever. The tapes were recovered in 2015 when Donna Jean Godchaux found them in a box while moving, and were meticulously remastered for this release.

The recording captures one of the most beloved lineups in JGB history: Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Keith Godchaux on keyboards, Donna Jean Godchaux on vocals, John Kahn on bass, and Ron Tutt on drums — the quintessential mid-'70s Garcia Band in peak form. Set One flows through "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," "After Midnight," and "Mission in the Rain," while Set Two delivers the goods with "Ride Mighty High," a sprawling "Don't Let Go," and the bluegrass closer "Midnight Moonlight."
