Recorded as Byrne was deepening his engagement with Brazilian and pan-global rhythms following his celebrated collaboration with Brian Eno, this self-titled statement finds him at his most eclectic and self-possessed as a solo artist. The album draws on the polyrhythmic obsessions he'd been chasing since the Talking Heads era while pushing into stranger, more personal territory.
