Mac Rebennack had been a respected New Orleans session guitarist for years before a hand injury pushed him toward the piano and, eventually, toward a full reinvention as the Night Tripper. Released in 1968, *Gris-Gris* introduced a sound that had no real precedent, drawing on Crescent City voodoo tradition, psychedelia, and second-line rhythm in equal measure, and it remains one of the most genuinely strange and transportive debuts in American music.
