Fela Kuti's catalog is vast, but these two records capture something essential about how he built his sound in the early 1970s, before Afrobeat became a fully weaponized political force. The contrast here is instructive: loose, exploratory grooves on one side, tight single-ready cuts on the other, recorded in London at one of the most storied studios on earth.

The songs on Open and Close and Afrodisiac reflect the two sides of the Fela musical story. On Open and Close, we see Fela and his band toying with more improvisational grooves and movements. The songs span 10 to 15 minutes in length and hold a very smooth and melancholy approach, while still producing a danceable and pop feel. Afrodisiac, recorded at Abbey Road, consists of songs originally released on 45rpm singles in Nigeria and features Fela's first Nigerian hit "Jeun Ko Ku".
