Recorded in September 1957, *Blue Train* stands as Coltrane's sole session as a leader for Blue Note, capturing him at a pivotal moment between his groundbreaking tenure with Miles Davis and the modal innovations that would define his later work on Impulse. The title track remains one of the most recognizable blues heads in jazz history, and hearing the alternate takes reveals how deliberately Coltrane and his band, including Lee Morgan and Curtis Fuller, shaped each phrase into something definitive.

Blue Train: The Complete Masters includes a bonus disc of alternate and incomplete takes (4 of which have never been released). The 2 CD set comes with a bound booklet featuring session photos by Francis Wolff and an essay by Coltrane expert Ashley Kahn.
