Johnny Cash – Johnny Cash (2-CD)
Product Details
The sound Cash, Perkins, and Grant built at Sun in the mid-1950s was so elemental it became its own genre, boom-chicka-boom rockabilly stripped to the bone, with Luther's two-note guitar runs and Marshall's slapped bass locking in around that baritone like nothing else in Memphis at the time. What Phillips heard in that audition room was something he hadn't signed before, not quite country, not quite rock and roll, just Cash.
Johnny Cash had just married a woman from Texas named Vivian Leberto and moved to Memphis when he formed a little country trio with guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant, and eventually they wrangled an audition with Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis. Phillips signed him to the label and the rest, well, is history. These are the tracks that got Cash's career rolling, and since he never really changed his approach as a singer through the years, they still hold up very, very well.
