Before he was celebrated as an actor or a Hollywood presence, Kristofferson was something rarer: a Rhodes Scholar and Army veteran who walked away from a teaching post at West Point to scrub floors at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville, betting everything on his songs. That gamble paid off for an entire generation of country music, as artists from Ray Price to Janis Joplin to Johnny Cash lined up to record his compositions before he ever released one himself.
