Product Details

Hurt's 1928 Okeh sessions were so far outside the aggressive Delta style dominating commercial blues at the time that they almost defied categorization, which may explain why the recordings faded from view for decades. When folklorist Tom Hoskins tracked him down in Avalon, Mississippi in 1963, Hurt's fingerpicking was utterly unchanged, a reminder that some musicians simply play the way they play, with no concession to fashion or time.

Perhaps the greatest exponent of country blues finger style guitar, Mississippi John Hurt stands as one of the most important blues musicians of the 20th century, with a career that began in the 1920s and by the 1940s was nearly forgotten until he was rediscovered in 1963 with his amazing music prowess still intact. He inspired a new generation of folk musicians and his importance cannot be overstated. Presented here are recordings from around the period of his rediscovery in the mid 1960s, a few short years before his death, and contains renditions of tunes that are most identified with this iconoclastic guitar genius - including "Candy Man," "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor," "My Creole Belle," "Casey Jones" and more. All selections have been newly remastered.
