Sam Cooke cut his deepest, most unguarded recordings when he stripped away the pop sheen and returned to the blues and gospel feeling that shaped him coming up through the Soul Stirrers. The material drawn from *Night Beat* in particular, recorded in a single late-night session in 1963, captures an intimacy that his chart hits rarely allowed, a reminder that one of the most technically gifted vocalists of the 20th century was also, at his core, a blues singer.

Sam's gospel and pop sides have been well-documented elsewhere, but his bluesy side's been a little overlooked. So, RCA's put together a 20-track album drawn from three of Sam's albums, Mr. Soul, My Kind of Blues and Night Beat, to show off his roots.
