Paul Westerberg wrote most of *All Shook Down* essentially as a solo record before the band's 1991 breakup, and the album's weary, acoustic-leaning tone made that dissolution feel less like a collapse than a quiet exhale. It stands apart from the ragged urgency of *Let It Be* or *Tim*, closer in spirit to a late-night confessional than a rock record, and that emotional honesty is exactly what made Westerberg's songwriting so hard to shake.
All Shook Down is the seventh and final studio album from The Replacements. John Cale, formerly of the Velvet Underground, plays viola on "Sadly Beautiful".
