Born and raised in Mamelodi township outside Pretoria, Vusi Mahlasela came of age during some of South Africa's most turbulent years, and his songs carried the weight of that history without ever losing their warmth. Dave Matthews, a longtime champion of Mahlasela's work, helped bring his voice to wider international audiences. "Sing to the People" lives up to its title, rooted in the Ubuntu tradition of music as collective expression rather than individual performance.
His music is generally described as "African folk" and he is often dubbed as "The Voice" of South Africa. His work was an inspiration to many in the anti-apartheid movement. His themes include the struggle for freedom, and forgiveness and reconciliation with your enemies.
