On June 28, 1969, more than a year before Hot Tuna was formally born, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady took the stage at the Veterans Memorial Building in San Francisco for an incendiary trio set with drummer Joey Covington. Captured by the Grateful Dead's legendary soundman Owsley "Bear" Stanley and released as part of the award-winning Bear's Sonic Journals archival series, Before We Were Them is a rare window into two of rock's most iconic musicians in their rawest, most exploratory form.

Jefferson Airplane's fabled guitar and bass duo tear through over 70 minutes of previously unreleased music, a hard-driving, electric muscle trio that draws comparisons to Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Four of the songs were so rare that Jorma and Jack named them for the first time specifically for this release. The 2-LP set also includes a never-before-released bonus track, "Uncle Sam's Blues," recorded the night before on June 27, 1969.

Pressed on electric orange and blue colored vinyl and accompanied by a deluxe 8-page booklet with liner notes from both Jorma and Jack, plus rare and previously unreleased vintage photographs. Remastered by Grateful Dead sound engineer Jeffrey Norman utilizing the Plangent Processes tape transfer system directly from Bear's original tapes.
