Jazz CDs

For the listener who still reaches for a physical disc when the music matters, this page collects 581 jazz CDs spanning classic catalog, contemporary voices, live sets, and box sets worth owning in full.

The titles here cover a lot of ground. John Coltrane's Giant Steps on Atlantic and Herbie Hancock's remastered Headhunters on Sony Music anchor the catalog end. Charles Mingus's Cumbia and Jazz Fusion on Rhino brings something stranger and harder to categorize. Miles Davis appears twice: the single-disc Very Best of Miles Davis digipak on Rhino and the eight-disc box set Complete Plugged Nickel Live 1965 on Sony Legacy, a live document that rewards the kind of attention a box set demands. Samara Joy's Portrait on Verve is available here as a signed CD. Jon Batiste's Monk Movements on Verve and Emmet Cohen's Universal Truth on Mack Avenue represent the current generation working inside the tradition. The store reflects that same range: we carry titles because they belong in a serious collection, not because an algorithm surfaced them. The Relix Sessions series extends that commitment to vinyl, offering live recordings produced by Relix and pressed to vinyl on the Relix Vinyl label. The result was The Melody of Rhythm (2009), recorded with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin. “We tried to write some pieces that took the melodies and compositions in the concerto and developed them into different areas,” explains Fleck. “But we really hadn't performed at all.”

It wasn’t until the three began touring to promote the album that the trio’s true potential became apparent. Although each had a base in a different musical realm — bluegrass for Fleck, Indian classical music for Hussain, and Western classical music for Meyer — they shared a gift for improvisation as well as an ability to reach across musical genres as casually as neighbors might chat over a backyard fence.” When we are performing on stage, in composing mode or creating mode, we are basically having a conversation,” says Hussain. “So the music emerges as we speak.”

Hence As We Speak, an album that not only showcases the group’s breathtaking abilities as instrumentalists, but underscores the wide range of musical influences at their command. Across a dozen tracks, the group glides easily between the cerebral complexity of Indian rhythm and the gut-level groove of a funky bass line, sounding equally at home with the rigors of raga.

Adding to that magic is Rakesh Chaurasia, who plays bansuri, an Indian bamboo flute. When the trio was touring India, Hussain — who knew Rakesh through his uncle, Indian flute legend Pandit Hariprasad Chaursia — invited the younger flautist to sit in, and the chemistry was immediately apparent. “I think we wanted to see if we could do something a little more organic with just a small group,” says Meyer. “And to have somebody who plays as beautifully as Rakesh join us really opened it up to a more lyrical and melodic situation.”

“What I think is good about this quartet is that everybody has to stretch in the direction of the other people,” adds Fleck. “To me, a collaboration where nobody changes is not a collaboration. That Sub Pop, a label built on Pacific Northwest rock, chose to release it speaks to how far Gabriel's story transcends genre boundaries and why the Preservation Hall tradition continues to find new audiences decades after the Hall first opened its doors on St. Peter Street.

I've been playing since I was 11 years old," says Charlie Gabriel, the most senior member of the legendary Preservation Hall Band, "I never did anything in my life but play music. I've been blessed with that gift that God gave me, and I've tried to nurse it the best way I knew how." While he's faced plenty of challenges nursing that gift for more than 78 years, none likely rank with last winter's passing of his brother and last living sibling, Leonard, lost to COVID-19. For the first time ever, Gabriel put down his horn, filling his days and weeks instead with dark reflection, a stubborn despondency broken now and then by regular chess matches in the studio kitchen of Hall leader Ben Jaffe, working overtime to bring his friend some light. One such afternoon also included Joshua Starkman, sitting off in a corner playing his guitar and half-watching the chess from a distance. When Charlie returned the next day, he brought his saxophone. "I was just inspired to try it, to play again. It had been a long time, and a guitar makes me feel free. I do love the sound of a piano, but it takes up a lot of a space, keeps me kind of boxed in." That day was to be the first session for Eighty Nine, almost entirely the work of Gabriel, Jaffe and Starkman, recorded mostly right there, in the kitchen, by Matt Aguiluz. Charlie Gabriel's first professional gig dates to 1943, sitting in for his father in New Orleans' Eureka Brass Band. As a teenager living in Detroit, Charlie played with Lionel Hampton, whose band then included a young Charles Mingus, later spending nine years with a group led by Cab Calloway drummer J.C. Heard. While he's also fronted a bebop quintet, played and/or toured with Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennet, Aretha Franklin and many more, this is the first time his name appears on the front of a record, as a bandleader. Since 2006, Gabriel has been a member of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, featuring prominently on That's It, So It Is, and Tuba to Cuba. Eighty Nine was different, and not simply due to a smaller ensemble. "We had no particular plan, or any particular insight on what we were gonna do. But we were enjoying what we were doing, jamming, having a musical conversation," Charlie says, further musing, "Musical conversations cancel out complications." Eighty Nine includes six standards and three newer pieces on which Gabriel is a writer: "Yellow Moon," "The Darker It Gets" and "I Get Jealous." The record also marks Charlie's return to his first instrument, clarinet, on many of the tracks. "The clarinet is the mother of the saxophone," he says. "I started playing clarinet early in life, and this [taught me] the saxophone." Finally, Eighty Nine includes three tracks of Charlie singing. "I always sung, but it wasn't my forte to become a singer," he says. "The truth is, people often develop a real relationship with a song once they hear the words. Sometimes I enjoy singing them.

Tracklist

1. Memories Of You (5:46)

2. Chelsea Bridge (3:02)

3. I'm Confessin' (6:12)

4. The Darker It Gets (4:12)

5. Stardust (5:09)

6. Three Little Words (3:19)

7. Yellow Moon (3:48)

8. I Get Jealous (5:36)

UPC: 098787149029
Label: Sub Pop
Release Date: 7.1.22
Format: CD

Rooted in the French Quarter institution that has kept New Orleans traditional jazz alive since 1961, Preservation Hall Jazz Band carries a lineage that connects directly to the city's earliest jazz masters. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history. So It Is (2017) finds the classic Preservation Hall Jazz Band sound invigorated by a number of fresh influences, not least among them the band’s 2015 life-changing trip to Cuba. A visit to the island, so integral to the evolution of jazz and New Orleans culture in general, had long been in the works when President Obama’s diplomatic opening suddenly allowed for a more extensive journey than had originally seemed possible. Producer David Sitek, a founder of art rock innovators TV on the Radio who has helmed projects by Kelis, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Santigold among others, offered both a keen modern perspective and a profound respect for the band’s storied history. He shortly thereafter joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. In the 1970s, Hancock experimented with jazz fusion, funk, and electro styles, utilizing a wide array of synthesizers and electronics. It was during this period that he released perhaps his best-known and most influential album, Head Hunters. Hancock received considerable attention when, in May 1963, he joined Davis's Second Great Quintet. Davis personally sought out Hancock, whom he saw as one of the most promising talents in jazz. While in Davis's band, Hancock also found time to record dozens of sessions for the Blue Note label, both under his own name and as a sideman with other musicians. In the summer of 1968 Hancock formed his own sextet. An academic might want to separate this stack of songs into neat little buckets-country, jazz, standards, blues, pop-but those are just the ingredients. Ray Charles sings whatever he likes and whatever he sings comes out as a Ray Charles song, with a flavor all it's own. Recorded in 1958 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York, these performances have spent decades buried in compilations, their full weight never quite given its due. That changes here.

Miles Davis's Kind of Blue was the number-one jazz album in history. It totaled five songs. There are four more songs from that same historic group, recorded in the same time period and at the same studio. And here they are. These songs deserve to stand on their own with artwork to highlight the quality of the music and that matches the time period of the recording. This is a rare opportunity to have a smash follow-up to what many consider the greatest jazz record ever!Through the years, these four remarkable performances - all from a single recording session in 1958 and all exemplary of the sound of Miles Davis' legend-loaded sextet of that year - have not been served well. They have been largely treated as add-ons for other compilations. Now, for the first time, Analogue Productions, the audiophile in-house reissue label of Acoustic Sounds, Inc., has deservedly given these tracks a stellar stand-alone release for jazz fans to savor! The once-in-a-generation lineup that recorded these tunes is the very same that would be immortalized for the enduring classic they would record almost a year later, Kind of Blue. Davis played trumpet sublime with his ensemble sextet featuring pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley.Undervalued since their recording, the tunes on this album reflect historial and musical significance. They offer early glimpses into the modal jazz that Kind of Blue would bring to the forefront. Using modes common in modern classical music, rather than the chords of popular songs, Miles had begun to experiment with the new approach on the Milestones recording sessions previously.Analogue Productions is proud to present Birth of the Blue in an exclusive first-of-it's-kind stand-alone release that reflects our reputation for meticulous production, capturing authentic sound with clarity, depth and fidelity that exceeds the audiophile standard. For this release, we started with the original 3-track recording session tapes that were mixed down to a brand-new 30 ips quarter-inch stereo master tape by senior mastering engineer Vic Anesini at Battery Studios. From that stereo master tape, Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab mastered the album direct to DSD for this Hybrid Stereo SACD.Smash follow-up to what many consider the greatest jazz record ever!Four more songs from the pioneering ensemble that produced Miles Davis' Kind of Blue!Modal jazz precursor laid the groundwork for future jazz innovation!Hybrid Stereo SACDMastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab direct to DSD from a new 30 ips quarter-inch stereo master tape transferred from the original 3-track session tapes.

TRACKLIST

On Green Dolphin Street

Fran-Dance

Stella by Starlight

Love For Sale

UPC: 198028166423
Label: Analogue Prod.
Release Date: 3.21.25
Format: CD

Recorded at the tail end of disco's commercial peak, *Monster* caught Hancock deep in his pop-crossover phase, the same restless experimentation that had already taken him from Blue Note hard bop to Headhunters funk.
