The Jerry Garcia Band was a vital component of Garcia's life away from the circus, and a grounding space to work-out solo material, nod to songs he was digging at the time, and just play. In the end, a JGB show would require an arena to accommodate the demand, but in '76, a modest club date in the Bay was all he and his friends needed.

It's a mostly mellow show, with a particularly slow take on Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," that may be among the more transfixed and affecting Garcia has performed. It's in keeping with a set that darts between eventual staples of a JGB show- "Catfish John," "After Midnight," and "The Harder They Come,"- and contemporaneous homages, such as a beautifully Jerry-esque reading of the Rolling Stones' "Moonlight Mile." The mix tilts toward Jerry's guitar, and fittingly, as there is plenty of his engaging fretwork, yet Garcia is quick to share the moments with his mates- especially with on-loan Dead keyboardist, Keith Godchaux, on a glistening "Mission in the Rain."

Two songs pulled from a Palo Alto date two nights later serve as an "encore," filling out the winning two-disc set. On GarciaLive Vol. 15: Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, May 21st, 1971, listeners are truly discovering something new. This previously uncirculated recording finds Garcia, keyboardist Merl Saunders and drummer Bill Vitt playing as a rare trio (sans regular bassist John Kahn) with occasional saxophone screeches from future Legion of Mary member Martin Fierro. At San Francisco's 200-cap Keystone Korner (not to be confused with the sister club in Berkeley), Garcia was free to step out from the Grateful Dead's shadow (just days before a Winterland Ballroom run) and flex his jazz muscles in raw, exhilarating form. Without bass, Saunders' keyboard work and organ playing holds down the low end and gives each musician even more room to groove with a loose, conversational tone. Opening with Saunders' "Man-Child," the trio doesn't waste any time getting out there with Saunders driving several subterranean-sounding peaks. On "One Kind Favor," the Blind Lemon Jefferson song also known as "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean," Garcia's aching vocals recall "Death Don't Have No Mercy," as Saunders' organ swirls. Fierro first speaks up on a swinging instrumental take on Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made to Love Her." The "Keystone Korner Jam" best captures the vibe of the performance—17 minutes of the quartet playing off each other, composing in the moment, with Garcia and Fierro pushing each other to explore. The real star of the recording, however, is the only known Garcia-sung performance of David Crosby's "The Wall Song," which Garcia would play guitar on in the studio. Garcia does an admirable job on vocals but it's Fierro who commands the jam with an assault of sax squeals (and a few Beatles quotes). For fans of Garcia's more esoteric work, GarciaLive Vol. 15 is a thrilling listen and a reminder that there's always something new waiting around the Korner.

— Rudi Greenberg, Relix

Product Details

By 1971, Garcia was already deep in the exploratory side-project work that would define so much of his legacy outside the Dead, and these Keystone Korner sessions capture that restless curiosity at an early stage. If, after his experience in a coma a few months earlier, this was Jerry Garcia’s test- a first performance back onstage- he got about 17,000 points just for showing up. The roar of those 17,000 filling the Oakland Coliseum Arena on Halloween night are just what the aging Captain needed to hear, and for the next two-and-a-half hours he gives them just what they needed: the music of the Jerry Garcia Band, and the assurance that he was, indeed, back.

With the first-set selections each hovering around the seven-minutes-and-change mark, that seems to be the sweet spot of expendable energy for the opening “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” through to the closing “Deal.” Garcia stretches “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” a bit longer than its counterparts, but otherwise the nine songs tend to cruise at similar altitudes, with Jerry’s relatively paced and relaxed guitar work and Melvin Seals’ flash of keyboards finding their peaks. Garcia’s voice is of fine vintage the entire evening, crackling with understood vulnerability on “The Maker,” against the always steadying backdrop of his loyal singers, Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch.

The comeback show, as far as repertoire and approach, is not unlike others of its era, nor should it be; it was Garcia’s style to underplay if not completely ignore any personal significance. A simple “So, how ya’ll doing?” is the majority of his communication with the hometown capacity crowd, ahead of the sly wink of Chuck Berry’s, “You Never Can Tell (C’est La Vie).” Such is life for this old folk.

The highlight of the second half- and possibly the show- is on its set starter, “Shining Star.” Performed with gentle hands and effortless restraint, the soulful cover of The Manhattans’ classic falls like leaves of orange and red from the weathering trees, wafting down and landing with a whisper. At over 12 minutes, it’s the showcase track of the autumnal night and all the proof anyone could ask for that Jerry Garcia could move an arena as one.

The second set is also slightly greasier than the first, and Garcia and Seals do get a bit fiery when the mood is right on “Tore Up Over You.” The ensemble returns for the now-hallowed favorite of this holiday, borrowed over from Garcia’s days with the Dead- Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London.” If it’s a bit ragged, it’s all forgiven; most costumes get that way by the end of the night. More important is everything that came before that last rocking encore, as Garcia and his band conjured up the spirits to dance once again.

No Comments comments associated with this post

— Larson Sutton, jambands.com

Product Details

Halloween has always carried weight in the Bay Area concert calendar, but this particular night hit different. It’s easy enough to regale the guitarist, singer, and songwriter as the Pied Piper of the Deadheads, and the description would not be unfair, yet it only touches on the most obvious of Garcia’s guises. Less apparent, and epitomized with this two-disc set, is the club-haunting Jerry delving into bluesy jazz and soul; the consummate teammate within a Bay Area all-star configuration equally as willing to support a honking Martin Fierro sax solo or a tasty Merl Saunders keyboard run.

Taken from a November 2,1974 appearance at Keystone Berkeley, Garcia and a quartet commandeer the local club for an evening of covers rendered in R&B, even dipped, at times, in a glaze of fusion. It’s familiar in its showcase of Jerry’s proclivity for a good jam, but it’s also relatively inconspicuous; Garcia, beyond the recognizable voice and guitar work, plays comfortably the roles of both support and lead. When Fierro stretches on flute, or Saunders fronts the vocal, Garcia slides into the background with as much maturity and skill as he does helming Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come” or Bob Dylan’s “Tough Mama;” the former, an adroit choice at the time for the eclectic repertoire; the movie and its soundtrack a somewhat niche release only two years prior.

Stretch these five do, (on the ten tracks only one comes in under five minutes), conjoining a late set, twenty-minutes-plus take on the Saunders original, “Wondering Why,” with “People Make the World Go Round.” The closing ride on “Mystery Train,” a Junior Parker blues popularized by Elvis Presley, is a rousing finale, running almost 15 minutes itself. Still, this is very much the egalitarian work of a talented ensemble, not a star-trip for the Captain. Nothing is more pervasive within the distinguished musicianship than the generosity of space and time for each and all of the five to have their fun, individually and collectively. The result is another face of Garcia and another night of wonderful music captured and shared.

No Comments comments associated with this post

— Larson Sutton, jambands.com

Product Details

The Keystone Berkeley run was Jerry's home away from home during the mid-70s, a small room in the East Bay where he could stretch out without the weight of the Dead's amphitheater expectations. The 16th installment of the GarciaLive series issues a complete concert drawn from the Jerry Garcia Band’s debut at Madison Square Garden in November of 1991. Fortunately, it’s so strong a performance at the hallowed New York City venue that it probably would’ve bullied its way to being released regardless of its historical significance.

The three-disc collection captures Garcia bringing his solo group for its first appearance at Manhattan’s mecca, though the greying guitarist and singer had been there plenty of times in his day job with the Grateful Dead, including just a few months prior. Still, Jerry (and Dead) fans knew these were separate wells meant to be visited often. And, as any fan also knew, even though the repertoire of a Jerry show was relatively consistent, it was, as always, the performance that mattered most.

True enough, the MSG setlist is loaded with JGB standards, touching off with “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” that, if not for being a regular in the song rotation, would seem like an acknowledgement of gratitude to the NYC faithful that packed, and necessitated graduating Garcia to, the world’s most famous arena. Jerry returns the love with a conspicuously tight and inspired array of musicianship. Adrenalin shots come from a set-one closing “Deal,” and a set-two recharge, “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox,” while a tranquil “Simple Twist of Fate,” with elbow room for John Kahn’s peaceful bass, and a gorgeously placid reading of “Shining Star” rock-a-bye the Garden party.

Melvin Seals is mesmerizing as he dresses “The Way You Do The Things You Do” with spritely vibes. Equally Seals owns “That Lucky Old Sun,” as Garcia modestly supports the keyboardist’s commanding blooms. And while the final two entries- “Bright Side of the Road” and “(What A) Wonderful World”- can’t help but symbolically reinforce the night’s obvious sentiment, it’s the accompanying musical substance of this captivating crew and its captain that cement this blissful evening into the annals of the Jerry Garcia Band.

No Comments comments associated with this post

— Larson Sutton, jambands.com

Product Details

The JGB in the fall of 1991 was operating at a remarkable peak, with Garcia's guitar work carrying a clarity and emotional directness that longtime followers still cite as some of his finest in that format. From there, Garcia saunters through "Valerie," with a knowing bluesman's lament; a scintillating rendition of the Garcia/Hunter original. Then, with skilled and patient aplomb, the ensemble injects reggae into The Beatles' "Dear Prudence," and then dazzles on the bluegrass undertones of Peter Rowan's "Mississippi Moon." Just four songs in, and this show feels very special.

Garcia and his band float into the minor-key space of "Don't Let Go" for a healthy twenty minutes of interstellar travel, and contrast that with the gentle, earthbound flow downstream on the river of Dylan, for the disc-closing "Simple Twist of Fate." The second-half opens with "Run for the Roses," and its Bertha-like jangle, followed with the wonky, clavinet-led lope of "They Love Each Other," (with Weir, Bobby Cochran, and Billy Cobham sitting-in, but unfortunately unheard).

And then, poof, just like that, it's over.

Those familiar with full shows from this exceptional GarciaLive series will not doubt notice the shift—sonically, and in personnel—to a four-song excerpt from a June '81 set at The Stone that fills out the rest of the second disc. It's a smartly-chosen fours songs, maintaining the energy and spirit of the Cape set; Garcia really stretches on "After Midnight" as it accelerates into cut-time. And while the continuity technically is broken, the mood is not.

This 8-song Cape performance by Jerry Garcia Band has all the invention and freedom of a classic show, packed into half the space. The jams are just as lengthy, but steam forward with urgency and intent. Garcia's voice is particularly present and mystical, with a grand storyteller's command of melody and cadence.

Which leads back to context, and why this latest volume in the series is a must-have. As Garcia and his band were well-aware of the show's parameters—sharing each night with Weir—and how much less stage time that equaled, they acted accordingly. This was a group comfortable and happy to play shows twice as long as the Cape appearance, but as such, paced those two-set shows as marathons. This one, albeit in its own inimitable JGB way, is a single-set, magical summer sprint on the shore.

— Larson Sutton, jambands.com

Product Details

By 1982, the Jerry Garcia Band had settled into a deep, soulful groove that felt distinct from anything happening on the Dead's stage. The lineup—Garcia, Melvin Seals (organ), John Kahn (bass), David Kemper (drums), Gloria Jones and Jaclyn LaBranch (vocals)—had developed telepathic communication through constant touring, and this show documents that connection at full strength. Melvin Seals' Hammond B3 organ is particularly prominent, providing the harmonic foundation that allowed Garcia to sing melodic lead lines with his guitar. But that power hasn’t always fully come through on the New Jersey band’s otherwise excellent studio albums. “False Company,” the opening track of the band’s fifth album, Dodging Dues, hits like a gut punch—a three-guitar assault that foreshadows the way the record favors a heavier, tighter indie-rock sound over jammy excursions. Produced by veteran guitarist Matt Sweeney (who rips a solo of his own on “Stray Cats”), Dodging Dues is an exercise in brevity with seven songs that zip by in 34 minutes. Considering Garcia Peoples once put out an album built around a 32-minute song (2019’s One Step Behind), Dodging Dues feels restrained, in a good way. Dodging Dues is the first Garcia Peoples album to feature lead vocals from five of the band’s six members: Keyboardist Pat “P.G. Six” Gubler (Wet Tuna) and bassist Andy Cush both sing for the first time, adding new dynamics to the Garcia Peoples sound. Cush aggressively snarls his way through “Stray Cats” and album-closing fist-pumper “Fill Your Cup” (trading lines with guitarist Danny Arakaki). Guitarist Derek Spaldo, often the de facto lead singer, only has one vocal here, but he makes it count with the mesmerizing love song “Cassandra.” Despite the myriad voices, there’s a cohesiveness that connects these songs (“Cold Dice”> “Tough Freaks”> “Stray Cats” is a suite). “Here We Are” finds Garcia Peoples at their most Yo La Tengo-esque: patient and meditative while building to a hypnotic crescendo driven by guest Dan Iead’s pedal steel guitar. Lead guitarist Tom Malach takes a rare vocal turn on choogle-y anthem “Tough Freaks,” which features a chorus that might as well sum up the LP’s ethos: “Tough freaks/ On those rough streets/ It’s impossible to cage us/ Don’t you try, it won’t phase us.”

No Comments comments associated with this post

— Rudi Greenberg, jambands.com

Product Details

Named after Jerry Garcia, this New Jersey outfit has spent years earning their stripes on the festival and club circuit, building a devoted following through relentless touring and an improvisational approach that honors the exploratory spirit of their namesake without simply replicating it. *Dodging Dues* finds them at their most compositionally focused, proving that a band rooted in the jam tradition can write tight, purposeful songs without sacrificing an ounce of their freewheeling soul.

Dodging Dues is a startlingly expansive record—“startling” in part because it’s relatively short (seven songs, all but one hovering around the four minute mark), but also because it traverses so many moods and styles: languid and dreamy one moment, surging and intense the next.
