There's a fine line between "fun creative prompt" and "tired gimmick," but King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have consistently avoided the latter through their 24 studio albums. They've explored microtonal tuning, structured song editing, and strict sonic parameters across thrash metal, prog, and electronica. Their latest album, The Silver Cord, showcases conceptual focus after drummer Michael Cavanagh purchased a Simmons electronic kit—inspiring the band to set guitars aside for keyboards. The album cover features the sextet surrounded by synthesizers, each wearing vintage red-tinted sunglasses. The band recorded two versions: a tighter edition and extended mixes inspired by Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder's work. While the extended version may fatigue casual listeners, the back half's general goofiness—including "cringe-worthy rapping and chanting on 'Gilgamesh'"—proves frustrating. However, brilliance emerges through dance-club drumming and repetitive synth-bass, particularly in the progressive tracks "Theia" and the title cut, "back-to-back bangers that ascend to their typical thrill-per-second heights."
