Originally released as a double album covering an ambitious range of subject matter from the politics of race to 1970s stadium rock, Southern Rock Opera either imagines, or filters, every topic through the context of legendary Southern band Lynyrd Skynyrd. New West Records is proud to present a remixed and remastered deluxe edition LP featuring a re-sequenced record as well as a third disc with multiple bonus tracks including a song "Mystery Song" that was recorded one night in Birmingham. Lead Singer, Patterson Hood explains, "Birmingham" and "Moved" were originally part of Act I on original CD release. This is the first vinyl version to feature "Moved" and we felt that "Birmingham" would be the best other song to move without messing up the story element of Betamax Guillotine. We moved them here to keep the vinyl sides within time of maximum high fidelity. (Under 23 minutes per mastering guidelines). In the process of re-mixing the original tracks for the album. We stumbled upon a mysterious track that was recorded late one night in Birmingham. None of us have any memory whatsoever of recording it. The song itself was never even written down, just made up on the spot while the tape was rolling. We're calling it "Mystery Song." It's actually a keeper."

Tracklist

Side A

1. Days Of Graduation

2. Ronnie And Neil

3. 72 (This Highway's Mean)

4. Dead, Drunk And Naked

5. Guitar Man Upstairs

Side B

1. The Southern Thing

2. The Great Alabama Icons

3. Wallace

4. Zip City

Side C

1. Let There Be Rock

2. Road Cases

3. Women Without Whiskey

4. Plastic Flowers On The Highway

5. Cassie's Brother

Side D

1. Life In The Factory

2. Shut Up And Get On The Plane

3. Greenville To Baton Rouge

4. Angels And Fuselage

Side E

1. Birmingham

2. Mystery Song

3. Moved

Side F

1. Don’t Cockblock The Rock

2. Zip City

3. Road Cases

4. 72 (This Highway’s Mean)

UPC: 607396583119
Label: New West Records
Release Date: 7.26.24
Format: LP Vinyl

The years between *Decoration Day* and *The Dirty South* represent the creative peak of Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, and Jason Isbell writing in the same room together, and the vault material here captures that chemistry in its rawest form. Released in 2009, it consists unreleased material mostly recorded throughout the making of their albums Decoration Day and The Dirty South; a highly prolific period for the band. It features album artwork and a sample of concert posters from 2009 by Wes Freed, and is produced by David Barbe. The Fine Print is the first Drive-By Trucker studio album to include covers of other artist's original recordings; most notably "Rebels" by Tom Petty, and "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan. The latter of these songs has each of it's four verses sung in rotation by Hood, Tucker, Isbell, and Cooley. Two of the songs on the album, "Uncle Frank" and "Goode's Field Road" are alternate takes of songs released on other Drive-By Truckers albums. "Uncle Frank" has only minor differences from the original as heard on Pizza Deliverance, while "Goode's Field Road" is much harder and faster than the slower paced track eventually recorded for Brighter Than Creation's Dark. The Fine Print version of "Goode's Field Road" almost made it onto The Dirty South, but at the last minute was switched for "Lookout Mountain".As the album was recorded during Jason Isbell's tenure with the Drive-By Truckers, two of his songs as performed by the Drive-By Truckers were also included. Kristofferson and band – acoustic and electric guitars, keys, rhythm section and occasional mandolin – stand at the crossroads of country, rock and folk music while playing stone classics such as "Me and Bobby McGee," "The Pilgrim," "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" and 12 others. Though he could never really sing 'em, Kristofferson sure could write 'em – "You Show Me Yours (And I'll Show You Mine)," "For the Good Times" and "Why Me" are among the other tracks – and his '81 band sure could play 'em.

— Kristopher Weiss, jambands.com

Product Details

Kris Kristofferson arrived at Gilley's already carrying one of the heaviest songwriting catalogs in American music, a body of work that had put artists like Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, and Roger Miller on the charts before he ever stepped in front of a crowd himself. They brought in Mavis Staples to sing on the cover and it's a seriously rousing, funky, glorious affair—one of those tunes you could play over and over and never tire of. At some point while replaying it, though, you remember that there are 11 other tracks on the new album that also rock and roll with the same level of gutsiness and energy and, really, any of them will do the trick when you just need a reminder that real soul is still out there. Some of the tunes, like "Mean Old World," also feature guests, in this case Duane Betts and Jason Isbell, and it, too, is real and gritty—just the kind of antidote you'd want if you're having a shitty day. Some others, like "Drunk Outdoors" and "Bump That Mother," require nothing more from a listener than the desire to have a little fun, while "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," one of a pair of tracks featuring Mississippi bluesman Cedric Burnside, burns with gospel fervor. North Mississippi Allstars are inching up on their 25th year together but, somehow, even with all of that behind them, it seems like this party they've got going is just getting started.

— Jeff Tamarkin, Relix

Product Details

Luther and Cody Dickinson have been carrying the North Mississippi hill country blues tradition forward since their teenage years, absorbing it directly from neighbors and family friends like R.L. The songs and stories originate in two neighboring rural counties. The cast of characters includes four families of Mississippi musicians, three generations deep, and a photographer from Texas.' - Luther Dickinson In 2017, Wyatt McSpadden found an old roll of film and tracked down members of North Mississippi Allstars to share his forgotten photographs. The images were so profound and so beautiful that they would come to inspire the latest recording, Up And Rolling. The images inspired the band to ask, 'What did the music sound like that night in 96? What does Mississippi music sound like now? What would ideally be on the push button AM/FM radio as we drove thru the hills?' The North Mississippi Allstars would return to the famous Zebra Ranch to record Up And Rolling, inspired by Wyatt's images. They gathered together, trimmed back the wisteria, and swept out the converted barn recording studio. The fired up the tube amps and old computers and began conjuring up modern Mississippi music, ancient and futuristic all at once. Telling it how it was and how they think it should be. Up And Rolling is modern Mississippi. Transcending time and space, the music reaches out into the dark of night like the wisteria vine, looking for free hearted souls to latch onto and wedge into the foundation of hate, slowly tearing down walls a generation at a time.

Tracklist

1. Call That Gone (4:44)

2. Up And Rolling (5:03)

3. What You Gonna Do? From the heady days as co-founder of the celebrated art new-wave group Talking Heads (1976-88) through his own constantly evolving and innovative solo music career, he has pursued his muse on many different artistic fronts. He's been the driving force behind a body of work that has been both intellectually daring and commercially successful... and he shows no signs of slowing down decades later. This show, captured on November 28, 2001, came on the heels of his hit single, "Like Humans Do" and the release of the album Look Into The Eyeball, which was another typically eclectic musical stew reflecting a variety of styles and influences, from Philly soul to a D.C. Go-Go inspired groove and his first-ever Spanish composition, "Desconocido Soy." Critics at the time called it his best work in years, and his performance on the Austin City Limits stage shows why. Joined by Austin's own eclectic tango ensemble Tosca, Byrne takes us down many different musical roads in his ACL debut.Of course, besides the brilliant songwriter and performer that he is, he's also an accomplished performance artist, photographer, web journalist, film writer / director, composer of motion picture soundtracks, and founder of his own world music label, Luaka Bop Records. He also has a collection of Grammys, Oscars and Golden Globes on his mantel. His music may be complex and poetic, but he makes no bones about his ultimate intent: "I want to move people to dance and cry at the same time.- Terry Lickona (Producer Austin City Limits)Back in print and pressed on Rose Marble vinyl

Tracklist

(Nothing But) Flowers

God's Child

And She Was

Once in a Lifetime

The Great Intoxication

Marching Through the Wilderness

The Revolution

This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody)

What a Day That Was

Desconocido Soy

Like Humans Do

Life During Wartime

I Wanna Dance with Somebody

UPC: 607396596515
Label: New West Records
Release Date: 11.28.25
Format: LP Vinyl

Luther and Cody Dickinson grew up in the Mississippi hill country with direct access to a living tradition, their father Jim Dickinson produced some of the most important blues and roots records of the late 20th century, and that inheritance runs bone-deep in everything North Mississippi Allstars touches. Undivided Heart & Soul produced by Dan Molad (Lucius) & McPherson, and developed largely in the studio (that studio being the historic RCA Studio B in Nashville), carries a sense of immediacy and irreverence. "In writing this record, I threw several handfuls of caution to the wind. Lyrically, I was allowing myself to be exposed in a way I never have before. Concurrently, maybe as some sort of a self defense mechanism, the guitars got fuzzier and louder. The first day at RCA was like being in church... by the second day, it was a high school band's rehearsal space." Putting the hands of Dan Molad on the wheel of the record ensured that the music didn't take too many expected turns. "Having toured with Lucius and befriended Dan, I knew he was the guy to push my buttons and challenge me to try new things. He's a tireless worker. He's constantly tinkering away on something... and music just falls out of him." The vintage recording equipment and instruments still housed in RCA Studio B greatly informed the direction of the record. "Each night, at the end of tracking, someone would invariably say, "You wanna put vibes on this?", speaking of the old RCA Vibraphone. I mean, you can hear THAT vibraphone on Roy Orbison's "Crying"... we couldn't keep our hands off of it. It guided some of the songs into some strange and wonderful places. "Lucky Penny" took such a cool turn once Ray (Jacildo, keys) added some to it. We wrote several songs on the piano that Floyd Cramer played "Last Date" on. We were soaking up so much of the phantom energy in that room, it led to some incredible sonic territory." "Most folks know us for our take on vintage R&B and early Rock N' Roll. The past year, I've been digging so much into the heavier, brasher sounds of early Rock N' Roll... from bands like The Sonics, Link Wray, and into some early British Rock such as The Creation... these influences feature heavily in these songs. "The tunes that showed up weren't exactly always in familiar territory, and... we greeted them as welcome strangers. Want finds her channeling that restless, road-worn honesty into something that feels both deeply personal and universally felt, the kind of writing that reminds you why country music at its best has always been about telling the plain truth in a melody you can't shake.

Esther Rose was on a long solo drive when she started writing the opening title track of Want, her stunning fifth album. At first, the words seemed almost like a joke, something to keep herself amused as the miles passed. “I want a puppy, but I don't want a mess. I want to know where I’m going without GPS,” she sang from behind the wheel. Soon, the idea snowballed into a list of desires that spanned existential, spiritual, and mundane; romantic to platonic to familial; at once wildly ambitious yet piercingly relatable; all set to a catchy melody that blends her pop instincts with country storytelling and the raw immediacy of a basement punk show. In other words, she was on her way to another classic Esther Rose song.

This precise blend has made the Santa Fe-based artist one of her generation’s most beloved songwriters: someone whose live shows are known to conclude in mass tears and group hugs. Still, something was different this time. “For me, these songs felt like revelations,” she explains, comparing the 11-song record to a memoir, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. In its newly direct and stirringly nuanced writing, you’ll hear about rock bottom encounters, shifting relationships with substances, evolving perspectives on adult partnership, and, as evidenced by those early lines in “Want,” a few jokes along the way. Vivid and bracing, Want places you in the passenger seat while each of these feelings arrive.

Tracklist

1. Want

2. Tailspin

3. Had To

4. Ketamine

5. Rescue You

6. Scars

7. Messenger

8. New Bad

9. The Clown

10. Color Wheel

11. Want Pt. 2

UPC: 607396659524
Label: New West Records
Release Date: 5.2.25
Format: CD

Billy Joe Shaver wrote some of the most honest songs in outlaw country history, and his son Eddy's guitar work gave the duo a live ferocity that set them apart from the Austin mainstream. *Victory*, released in 1998, found the father-son partnership fully locked in, delivering the kind of hard-won, plainspoken spirituality that made Shaver a touchstone for everyone from Waylon Jennings to Bobby Bare.

Tracklist

1. Son Of Calvary (1:12)

2. You Can't Beat Jesus Christ (3:46)

3. Cowboy Who Started The Fight (4:33)

4. Live Forever (3:51)

5. I'm In Love (2:22)

6. If I Give My Soul (4:36)

7. When The Fallen Angels Fly (3:40)

8. Christian Soldier (3:05)

9. My Mother's Name Is Victory (3:51)

10. Old Five And Dimers (2:39)

11. Presents From The Past (1:53)

12. The Bow And The Arrow (1:41)

UPC: 607396600328
Label: New West Records
Release Date: 7.14.98
Format: CD

Nashville's All Them Witches built their reputation the old-fashioned way, through relentless touring and a live intensity that translates directly onto tape. Joseph Arthur, meanwhile, built a reputation as one of his generation's most distinctive singer-songwriters, known for layered, loop-based live performances. Their pairing here feels less like a calculated project and more like something that simply had to happen.

Sometimes the catalyst for creating great art is simply being in the right place at the right time. For Arthur Buck, the new collaboration between singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur and guitarist Peter Buck, that place was Mexico, and that time was the fall of 2017. Specifically, a little town off the Baja coast named Todos Santos, with the Sierra de la Laguna mountains to the east and the bright blue Pacific stretching out infinitely to the west. It is here that Buck has, for the last several years, held the Todos Santos Music Festival, which he created with his wife, Chloe Johnson, in 2012, shortly after R.E.M. called it a day. Among the many artists who have played the festival is Joseph Arthur, who also happened to leave behind a guitar—a Dobro, specifically—after his last appearance there. And so last year he made the trek down to Todos Santos to pick up the instrument. Which is where he ran into Peter Buck.

That was the beginning of Arthur Buck. The creative result of this relationship is a vibrant 11-song collection that captures the spontaneity at the heart of the project—right down to the 1-2-3-4 count off from Buck that opens the record—with sounds and styles meshed together in an easy, almost playful manner. Tchad Blake was brought in to mix the proceedings, and the result is the new Arthur Buck—the result of a shockingly productive burst of inspiration.

Tracklist

1. I Am The Moment (3:14)

2. Are You Electrified?
