Rice, who died in 2020 at age 69, was a master craftsman whose influence, particularly when he performed in tandem with equals such as mandolinist David Grisman and banjoist Béla Fleck or in his own Tony Rice Unit, remains incalculable. Church Street Blues, originally released in 1983, is something different though. Although Wyatt Rice, Tony's guitar-playing brother, appears on four songs, this was largely a Tony Rice solo record, with the musician's vocals receiving as much attention as his picking. The title track, written by Norman Blake, another peer of Rice's, starts things off, taken at midtempo and reaffirming not only Rice's virtuosity on guitar but also his amiability as a singer. Largely alternating between both traditional and modern folk and bluegrass material here, Rice was adept at customizing any song. His take on Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline tune "One More Night" retains the original's good-time country feel while tailoring it just enough that it would have worked at one of Dylan's early coffeehouse gigs. Rice's version of "Pride of Man" has more in common with composer Hamilton Camp's original than Quicksilver Messenger Service's electric remake, and two other folk standards, Tom Paxton's "Last Thing on My Mind" and Ralph McTell's "Streets of London," are easy on the ears, two more ideal showcases for Rice's superb musicianship. But when he shifts gears into bluegrass (Bill Monroe and Byron Berline's "The Gold Rush" and Jimmie Rodgers' buoyant "Any Old Time"), Rice is in his element there as well. This was such the case for Greensky Bluegrass, who started out working on song compositions for their eighth studio set, Stress Dreams by email, voice notes and home demos. It was an interesting method of writing for a veteran bluegrass band—but that distance didn't hinder them one bit. Stress Dreams finds the band in fine form once again, exploring big themes and daily hardships in both profound and simple terms. "Streetlight" is an ode to working day in, day out, doing the same job over and over, while "Until I Sing" is a heartfelt admission of feeling worthless unless you're singing for the one you love. The playful honky-tonk of "Give a Shit," too, is another number that has Greensky going down some dark roads, as they confess by saying, "Ruined in back with these broken eyes/ I'm looking forward to tomorrow/ My pain is my humble disguise/ Because I don't really give a shit." But the highlight of the 13-song set is the title track "Stress Dreams." It's a number that stretches out a little over eight minutes, with a driving, euphoric sounding opening and Holly Bowling complementing the tune with her piano prowess. The song morphs into a longish instrumental that drifts into something quite beautiful, before returning to the chorus at the song's close. Moments like this pop up again and again, and this juxtaposition of exploration and beauty is the reason Greensky has cultivated the fanbase they have over the last two decades. Although the music is anchored by personnel familiar to those who've been following Strings for a while—Billy Failing (banjo, vocals), Royal Masat (bass, vocals), Jarrod Walker (mandolin, vocals) and Alex Hargreaves (fiddle), alongside several guests—the songwriting and arrangements show a marked maturation, and the album on the whole bears a cohesiveness that's been hinted at but never so fully realized before. The solos are still prominent and consistently out of this world, but there is much more going on here, a greater commitment to the bigger picture. All of the 20 songs on Highway Prayers are Strings originals, recorded at various locations in Nashville and Los Angeles between 2021 and early this year, with co-production by Strings and Jon Brion. The tales they tell—much like those on 2022's Me/and/Dad, Strings' previous studio release—are often intimate, drawn from personal experience, albeit universal in nature. "Leadfoot"—a standout account of one crazy-ass driver, featuring Strings on just about every instrument except drums (including banjo, steel guitar and a 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle)— borders on the chaotic, and as long as we're hitting the road, let "My Alice" be a cautionary tale. It's far from the first-ever song with a big ol' set of wheels at its center, but it's one of the nastiest. Of course, there are a couple of wild instrumentals to serve as a reminder that the virtuosity is built-in ("Malfunction Junction"), but Highway Prayers goes beyond mere pickin'. This exploration showcases their roots in bluegrass while venturing into diverse musical territories.

The album opens with “The Truth Fits,” setting the tone with a message of independence and self-discovery. “Cruisin’' then subtly shifts away from initial certainties, embodying a sense of confusion and the quest to “find a way through,” reflecting one of Yonder’s core themes. In 'Here I Go,' the band confronts the ambiguity of growth versus failure, departing from traditional bluegrass with an instrumental bridge and solos, featuring Jerry Douglas offering an improvisational answer to the song’s central question. “Didn’t Go Wrong” delivers a sonic uplift, blending old country lyricism with modern jam band elements to celebrate new love, transcending typical “cheating song” narratives. The title track, “ Nowhere Next,” centers the album. It’s the middle of the compass with all cardinal points possible, alley ways, hotel stairs, and the traps we find ourselves in. “Leave the Midwest” captures an introspective moment of revisiting one's past and reckoning with the present of where we tell ourselves we’re ok with where we’ve landed. “Second Hand Smoke” continues this theme, making a distinction between authenticity and pretense, while “Come See Me” offers a straightforward bluegrass tune that invites listeners to join in the journey of music, travel, and time. “Outlaw” celebrates unexpected positive changes and “Wasting Time” offers a humorous take on self-reflection and resignation.
