The December 2010 Relix issue features our Family Issue cover story and much more! The five record label families featured in this issue have two distinct traits: they all began around one artist and their subsequent roster of artists has frequently collaborated with one another on albums and in concert. And, for the most part, all the individual labels' artists are friends before they were ever business partners. Bushfire Records began as an outlet for singer/songwriter Jack Johnson slowly but surely became a label for like-minded artists. Jazz-funk trio Soulive launched its label Royal Family with the release of its record Up Here in 2008. Since then, it's become an outlet for all Soulive recordings, as well as numerous Soulive affiliated projects. The Brooklyn-based Daptone Records channels the spirits of Stax and Motown into its own modern brand of soul. The label has brought a decidedly retro sound back to the mainstream. When Arts & Crafts Productions was launched in 2002, it was originally envisioned as the management wing and label for Broken Social Scene. It quickly became the go-to platform for some of indie music's best players. Launched in 2009, The Royal Potato Family is a Brooklyn-based record label that began with experimental jazz pianist Marco Benevento. In less than two years, it has become the official home to a family of artists.

This issue also includes features and articles on Dar Williams, Huey Lewis, Ryan Montbleau Band, Cloud Cult, Jesse McReynolds, Luísa Maita, Scott Metzger, Sasha Dobson, Railroad Earth, Paul Riddle of The Marshall Tucker Band, and more!
