N.W.A. sampled the title track on "Express Yourself" in 1988, cementing Charles Wright's groove into hip-hop's foundation and introducing a whole new generation to the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's locked-in pocket. Wright's band came up in the same late-'60s Los Angeles scene that produced some of the era's most vital funk and soul, and their rhythmic approach had a rawness that set them apart from more polished contemporaries.
