Its wistful, relaxed state — immediately apparent via the innocent album-opening invitation "Will you come with me?" on "Uncle John's Band" — owes to the circumstances surrounding its creation. At the time, the Dead owed a considerable financial debt to Warner Bros. and were hobbled by a recent drug bust and financial scandal. Most significantly, the band was recovering from — and reacting to — the tragic events of the Altamont Music Festival and the symbolic end of the peace and love era. As such, Workingman's Dead acts as a retreat from chaos and uncertainty, its songs emblems of simpler times and pleas for compassion in the face of hardship.

Lyricist Robert Hunter said he aimed to capture the vintage elements of late 1940s country-and-western jukebox singles as well as old blues classics. The Jerry Garcia Band was a vital component of Garcia's life away from the circus, and a grounding space to work-out solo material, nod to songs he was digging at the time, and just play. In the end, a JGB show would require an arena to accommodate the demand, but in '76, a modest club date in the Bay was all he and his friends needed.

It's a mostly mellow show, with a particularly slow take on Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," that may be among the more transfixed and affecting Garcia has performed. It's in keeping with a set that darts between eventual staples of a JGB show- "Catfish John," "After Midnight," and "The Harder They Come,"- and contemporaneous homages, such as a beautifully Jerry-esque reading of the Rolling Stones' "Moonlight Mile." The mix tilts toward Jerry's guitar, and fittingly, as there is plenty of his engaging fretwork, yet Garcia is quick to share the moments with his mates- especially with on-loan Dead keyboardist, Keith Godchaux, on a glistening "Mission in the Rain."

Two songs pulled from a Palo Alto date two nights later serve as an "encore," filling out the winning two-disc set. It marked the departure of founding guitarist Danny Whitten, as well as Jack Nitzsche and Nils Lofgren. In Nitzsche's place is singer, songwriter, and keyboard player John Blanton, and the lead and bottleneck guitar work is provided by singer and songwriter Greg Leroy. Among them, Ralph Molina, Billy Talbot and George Whitsell contribute on all the album's songs, with Whitsell chipping in seven. More than 50 years after the first Neil Young & Crazy Horse album, the all-time rock classic Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, the group decamped to a restored 19th century barn in the Rocky Mountains during the summer of 2021 to lay down a new collection of songs. The fresh, crisp air did them well: Barn is a clear-eyed, righteously ragged, emotionally piercing rock-and-roll record. It’s almost unbelievable to think that a half century on, this collection of rock stalwarts can still crank it up this much. And yet, these 10 songs perfectly encapsulate the spirit of the genre: loose, loud, swaggering and fun. Barn kicks off with first single “Song of the Seasons,” the only real descendent here of, say, Comes A Time. (Most of these tunes share more DNA with 1990’s Ragged Glory.) It’s a lovely acoustic folk tune, with backing harmonies from his Crazy Horse compatriots. But the album really lights up beginning with “Heading West”—from that first raw, jagged guitar tone, you can tell Young is having a wild time. Same goes for “Canerican,” a ripping rocker with Young looking back on his long, winding history: “I was born in Canada, came south to join a band/ Got caught up in the big time, travelin’ through the land,” his voice (and guitar solo) every bit as proud and raging as in decades past. Barn could’ve been made by a young rock-and-roll band, and it’d be well-received. But to have been created by a crew of rock lifers in their 70s— clearly having a blast making music together—it should be celebrated.

No Comments comments associated with this post

— Justin Jacobs, jambands.com

Product Details

Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been making records together since 1969, and the loose, lived-in chemistry they found on albums like "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and "Rust Never Sleeps" remains unlike anything else in rock. "Barn" arrives as Young's environmental concerns sit at the center of his lyrics, connecting the off-grid recording setting to the broader themes running through his later work.

BARN, the new Neil Young/Crazy Horse album was recorded in a remote, restored, 19th century log barn.
