The first Grateful Dead album on Arista Records and the first studio album featuring an outside producer since their debut a decade earlier, Terrapin Station is one of the deepest, densest, and most ambitious records in the entire Dead catalog. Arista president Clive Davis paired the band with Fleetwood Mac producer Keith Olson, and together they created something unlike anything the Dead had made before — filled with strings, horns, a choir, and countless new sonic textures.

Side 1 is a remarkable collection of songs in its own right: the hypnotic "Estimated Prophet," the hard-driving "Samson and Delilah," Lesh's funky "Passenger," a rollicking "Dancin' in the Streets," and Donna Jean Godchaux's first lead vocal on a Dead album, the tender "Sunrise." Side 2 is given over entirely to the sprawling Terrapin Station suite — Lady With a Fan, Terrapin Station, Terrapin, Terrapin Transit, At a Siding, Terrapin Flyer, and Refrain — one of the most ambitious and exciting sequences of music the Grateful Dead ever committed to record.
