Her songwriting has always found her as a keen-eyed observer, a deeply empathetic and thoughtful storyteller with a skill for probing memory, heartbreak, and unhealed trauma, a shroud of syncopation or off-kilter guitar taking a song somewhere quietly prodigious. Her last solo album, the critically-lauded Head of Roses, took on heartbreak from a dualistic perspective, following a winding thread of intuition into the unknown and into healing. Her new album, The Life You Save, takes that a step further; put simply, it's the most honest, intimate and personally revealing record of Wasner's career. As heart-wrenching as they are hopeful, it's twelve tracks delve the depths of addiction and codependency, inherited and experienced trauma, and the process of finding peace in the face of others' suffering. The Life You Save is resonant, unflinchingly exposed - like a missive from the eye of a storm. But while it somehow manages to feel both viscerally raw and vulnerable, above it floats a sense of quiet peace, a sheen of hindsight, or perhaps of acceptance. It is the story of how it feels to be trapped between two worlds-the one you came from, and the one you've escaped to; about the belief that somehow, you can take the ones you love with you to this place; about the grief of realizing that the only person you can save is yourself. The Life You Save was produced by Jenn Wasner and recorded at Betty's in Chapel Hill, NC, and Montrose Recording in Los Angeles, CA, with additional production from Nick Sanborn. NOLA's Preservation Hall Jazz Band visited the island in 2015 and made a documentary film about their travels, and this collection is ostensibly its soundtrack, augmented by new tunes written on their return. Its diversity is its greatest strength: Cuba, like New Orleans, is not about one style of music, and A Tuba to Cuba does as much as possible within its 43 minutes to make that clear. Its leadoff track, all 49 forlorn and yearning seconds of it, features a lone tenor saxophone played in a small space somewhere in Havana by Clint Maedgen, but the mood picks up soon enough with "Tumba," all pulsating polyrhythms and celebration. "Keep Your Head Up," featuring a lead vocal by the alluring Eme Alfonso, is a spicy dish of condensed cream of party, irresistibly rhythmic—if the PHJB has ever had more fun cutting a tune, this fan would like to hear it. The liner notes liken the number's spellbinding chanting to a Mardi Gras Indians march in the band's hometown, and from there it's nothing but a straight line to Havana. As for that tuba, it's here, and there, but the Pres Hall folks aimed for, and discovered, something higher on this set, which runs the glorious gamut from the solo guitar of Alejandro Almenares, on "Las Palomas" (written by his father) to the sly Latin soul of "Kreyol" to the full-band blast of "I Am."

— Jeff Tamarkin, Relix

Product Details

Ben Jaffe has been the soul of Preservation Hall since taking the reins from his parents Allan and Sandra Jaffe, and this project represents something deeply personal: a pilgrimage to the Afro-Cuban wellspring that shaped New Orleans rhythm and brass long before either city's music was ever recorded. Herrington and Danny Clinch. The film follows Ben Jaffe of New Orleans’ famed Preservation Hall Jazz Band as he seeks to fulfill his late father's dream of retracing their musical roots to the shores of Cuba in search of the indigenous music that gave birth to New Orleans jazz. A Tuba to Cuba celebrates the triumph of the human spirit expressed through the universal language of music and challenges us to resolve to build bridges, not walls. The New York Times said: “This joyous, wide-ranging account of a New Orleans jazz band's 2015 visit to Cuba is crammed with fascinating facts and toe-tickling tunes.” And, from the LA Times: “Jaunty, at times poetic chats and drop-ins with many Big Easy and Cuban jazz artists, discussion of their music’s African lineage (the Atlantic slave trade factored in), stirring examples of native instrumentation, and pulsating performances combine with colorful, travelogue-type shots (love those old Cuban theaters) and vivid archival footage to create a vibrant and joyous portrait.” Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s Ben Jaffe said of “Kreyol,” the lead single from the soundtrack: “Every evening in Havana people gather along the waterfront to socialize. I’ve always been taken by the tempo at which people stroll, like New Orleans, there’s a very particular rhythm to their walk. That rhythm was the inspiration for ‘Kreyol.’ In fact, ‘Kreyol’ is the Cuban spelling of ‘Creole.’ You can feel that same Creole influence in New Orleans, it’s one of our many shared connections with Cuba.” (The film is available through Amazon Video, iTunes, DirecTV, Google Play, YouTube Movies and more. About Preservation Hall Jazz Band: At a moment when musical streams are crossing with unprecedented frequency, it’s crucial to remember that throughout its history, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge, mingle, and resurface, transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history. Preservation Hall Jazz Band recently signed with Sub Pop Records, who are re-releasing the band’s 2013 album That’s It! (over 39,000 copies sold) and 2017’s So It Is on June 28th, with new music to follow.

Tracklist

1. Yesteryear

2. Tumba

3. I Am

4. Descarga Del Son / Septeto Tipico Oriental

5. Keep Your Head / Eme Alfonso

6. Corazon

7. Eleggua / Raices Habaneras

8. Kreyol

9. El Manicero

10. Solitude

11. Las Palomas / Alejandro Almanares

12. Malecon

UPC: 098787131024
Label: Sub Pop
Release Date: 11.29.19
Format: CD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/Preservation-Hall-Jazz-Band-A-Tuba-to-Cuba-Original-Soundtrack-CD.png?v=1776111586
preservation-hall-jazz-band-thats-it-cd
Preservation Hall Jazz Band – That's It (CD)

Rooted in a French Quarter institution that has been drawing pilgrims since 1961, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has always understood that tradition isn't a museum piece. I've been blessed with that gift that God gave me, and I've tried to nurse it the best way I knew how." While he's faced plenty of challenges nursing that gift for more than 78 years, none likely rank with last winter's passing of his brother and last living sibling, Leonard, lost to COVID-19. For the first time ever, Gabriel put down his horn, filling his days and weeks instead with dark reflection, a stubborn despondency broken now and then by regular chess matches in the studio kitchen of Hall leader Ben Jaffe, working overtime to bring his friend some light. One such afternoon also included Joshua Starkman, sitting off in a corner playing his guitar and half-watching the chess from a distance. When Charlie returned the next day, he brought his saxophone. "I was just inspired to try it, to play again. It had been a long time, and a guitar makes me feel free. I do love the sound of a piano, but it takes up a lot of a space, keeps me kind of boxed in." That day was to be the first session for Eighty Nine, almost entirely the work of Gabriel, Jaffe and Starkman, recorded mostly right there, in the kitchen, by Matt Aguiluz. Charlie Gabriel's first professional gig dates to 1943, sitting in for his father in New Orleans' Eureka Brass Band. As a teenager living in Detroit, Charlie played with Lionel Hampton, whose band then included a young Charles Mingus, later spending nine years with a group led by Cab Calloway drummer J.C. Heard. While he's also fronted a bebop quintet, played and/or toured with Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennet, Aretha Franklin and many more, this is the first time his name appears on the front of a record, as a bandleader. Since 2006, Gabriel has been a member of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, featuring prominently on That's It, So It Is, and Tuba to Cuba. Eighty Nine was different, and not simply due to a smaller ensemble. "We had no particular plan, or any particular insight on what we were gonna do. But we were enjoying what we were doing, jamming, having a musical conversation," Charlie says, further musing, "Musical conversations cancel out complications." Eighty Nine includes six standards and three newer pieces on which Gabriel is a writer: "Yellow Moon," "The Darker It Gets" and "I Get Jealous." The record also marks Charlie's return to his first instrument, clarinet, on many of the tracks. "The clarinet is the mother of the saxophone," he says. "I started playing clarinet early in life, and this [taught me] the saxophone." Finally, Eighty Nine includes three tracks of Charlie singing. "I always sung, but it wasn't my forte to become a singer," he says. "The truth is, people often develop a real relationship with a song once they hear the words. Sometimes I enjoy singing them.

Tracklist

Memories of You

Chelsea Bridge

I'm Confessin'

The Darker It Gets

Stardust

Three Little Words

Yellow Moon

I Get Jealous

UPC: 098787149005
Label: Sub Pop
Release Date: 7.29.22
Format: LP Vinyl

Rooted in a French Quarter institution that has been welcoming musicians and listeners through its doors since 1961, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has never been a museum piece. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history. So It Is (2017) finds the classic Preservation Hall Jazz Band sound invigorated by a number of fresh influences, not least among them the band’s 2015 life-changing trip to Cuba. A visit to the island, so integral to the evolution of jazz and New Orleans culture in general, had long been in the works when President Obama’s diplomatic opening suddenly allowed for a more extensive journey than had originally seemed possible. Producer David Sitek, a founder of art rock innovators TV on the Radio who has helmed projects by Kelis, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Santigold among others, offered both a keen modern perspective and a profound respect for the band’s storied history. So It Is is now back in print on vinyl and CD via Sub Pop, which signed Preservation Hall Jazz Band in 2018, and will soon be releasing new music by the band.

Tracklist

1. So It Is (3:46)

2. Santiago (4:01)

3. Innocence (5:28)

4. La Malanga (5:31)

5. Convergence (5:42)

6. One Hundred Fires (6:26)

7. Mad (3:19)

UPC: 098787126327
Label: Sub Pop
Release Date: 6.28.19
Format: CD

Josh Tillman has spent his Father John Misty career as rock's most self-aware provocateur, but *Mahashmashana* finds him trading ironic distance for something rawer and more orchestral. Fleet Foxes are, for lack of an imminently more marketable descriptor, a group trafficking in baroque harmonic pop. And the joy they derive in doing so is palpable. We feel it too. They are, self-described, not much of a rock band. With the help of credit cards, minimum wages, tip money, friends and family, Fleet Foxes crafted their first demo, and subsequently the Sun Giant EP and this debut full-length album, with family friend Phil Ek manning the rudder. Drawing influence from the traditions of folk music, pop, choral music and gospel, sacred harp singing, West Coast music, traditional music from Ireland to Japan, film scores, and their NW peers, Fleet Foxes ranges in subject matter from the natural world and familial bonds to bygone loves and stone cold graves.

Tracklist

SIDE A

1. "Sun It Rises" (3:14)

2. "White Winter Hymnal" (2:27)

3. “Ragged Wood" (5:07)

4. "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" (3:28)

5. "Quiet Houses" (3:32)

6. "He Doesn't Know Why" (3:20)

SIDE B

7. "Heard Them Stirring" (3:02)

8. “Your Protector" (4:09)

9. "Meadowlarks" (3:11)

10. "Blue Ridge Mountains" (4:25)

11. "Oliver James" (3:23)

EP SIDE A

12. "Sun Giant" (2:06)

13. "Drops In The River" (4:11)

14. “English House" (4:48)

EP SIDE B

15. "Mykonos" (alternate Version) (3:39)

16. “Isles" (3:06)

UPC: 098787077711
Label: Sub Pop
Release Date: 6.3.08
Format: LP Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/packshot-fleet-foxes-fleet-foxes-vinyl-lp-relix.jpg?v=1779358823
fleet-foxes-first-collection-2006-2009-4-cd
Fleet Foxes – First Collection: 2006-2009 (4-CD)

Robin Pecknold and company arrived seemingly out of nowhere in 2008, their close harmonies and baroque folk arrangements feeling ancient and urgent all at once. Arriving just a year after the sprawling Pure Comedy, it's a deliberately leaner set, trading grand civilizational satire for something rawer and more personal, proof that Tillman is just as unsettling when he strips away the orchestration and turns the microscope on himself.

Written largely in New York between summer 2016 and winter 2017, Josh Tillman’s fourth Father John Misty LP, God’s Favorite Customer, reflects on the experience of being caught between the vertigo of heartbreak and the manic throes of freedom.

God’s Favorite Customer reveals a bittersweetness and directness in Tillman’s songwriting, without sacrificing any of his wit or taste for the absurd. From “Mr. Tillman,” where he trains his lens on his own misadventure, to the cavernous pain of estrangement in “Please Don’t Die,” Tillman plays with perspective throughout to alternatingly hilarious and devastating effect. “We’re Only People (And There’s Not Much Anyone Can Do About That)” is a meditation on our inner lives and the limitations we experience in our attempts to give and receive love. It stands in solidarity with the title track, which examines the ironic relationship between forgiveness and sin. Together, these are songs that demand to know either real love or what comes after, and as the album progresses, that entreaty leads to discovering the latter’s true stakes.

God's Favorite Customer was produced by Tillman and recorded with Jonathan Rado (Foxygen), Dave Cerminara (Jonathan Wilson, Foster the People, Conor Oberst), and Trevor Spencer (FJM). Pure Comedy arrived at a particularly raw cultural moment, and its sprawling, orchestrated arrangements reward the kind of patient listening that feels increasingly rare.

Pure Comedy, Father John Misty’s third album, is a complex, often-sardonic, and, equally often, touching meditation on the confounding folly of modern humanity. Father John Misty is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Josh Tillman. Tillman has released two widely acclaimed albums – Fear Fun (2012) and I Love You, Honeybear (2015) – and the recent “Real Love Baby” single as Father John Misty, and recently contributed to songs by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Kid Cudi. While we could say a lot about Pure Comedy – including that it is a bold, important album in the tradition of American songwriting greats like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, and Leonard Cohen – we think it’s best to let its creator describe it himself. Take it away, Mr. Tillman: Pure Comedy is the story of a species born with a half-formed brain. The species’ only hope for survival, finding itself on a cruel, unpredictable rock surrounded by other species who seem far more adept at this whole thing (and to whom they are delicious), is the reliance on other, slightly older, half-formed brains. This reliance takes on a few different names as their story unfolds, like “love,” “culture,” “family,” etc. Over time, and as their brains prove to be remarkably good at inventing meaning where there is none, the species becomes the purveyor of increasingly bizarre and sophisticated ironies. These ironies are designed to help cope with the species’ loathsome vulnerability and to try and reconcile how disproportionate their imagination is to the monotony of their existence. Something like that. Pure Comedy was recorded in 2016 at the legendary United Studios (Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Beck) in Hollywood, CA. It was produced by Father John Misty and Jonathan Wilson, with engineering by Misty’s longtime sound-person Trevor Spencer and orchestral arrangements by renowned composer/double-bassist Gavin Bryars (known for extensive solo work, and work with Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Derek Bailey).

Tracklist

Pure Comedy

Total Entertainment Forever

Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution

Ballad of the Dying Man

Birdie

Leaving LA

A Bigger Paper Bag

When the God of Love Returns There'll Be Hell to Pay

Smoochie

Two Wildly Different Perspectives

The Memo

So I'm Growing Old on Magic Mountain

In Twenty Years or So

UPC: 098787120028
Label: Sub Pop
Release Date: 4.7.17
Format: CD

Josh Tillman has spent his Father John Misty career turning personal mythology into orchestral confession, and Mahashmashana finds him leaning into that impulse at full scale. Each time we finish a record I want the next one to sound totally different. It's fun to play with people who bring in new styles and ideas, " says Martsch. "And it's nice to be in a band with people who aren't sick of me yet." Following several albums and EPs on Pacific Northwest independent labels, including the indie-rock classic, There's Nothing Wrong With Love, released on Sub Pop offshoot Up Records in 1994, Martsch signed with Warner Brothers from 1995 to 2016. He and his rotating cast of cohorts recorded six more great albums during that time - Perfect From Now On, Keep It Like a Secret, Ancient Melodies of the Future, You In Reverse, Untethered Moon, There Is No Enemy. There was also a live album, and a solo record, Now You Know. While the band's impeccable recorded catalog is the entry point, Built to Spill live is an essential force of it's own: heavy, psychedelic, melodic, and visceral tunes blaring from amps that sound as if they're powered by Mack trucks. Now in 2022, Built to Spill returns with When the Wind Forgets Your Name, Martsch's unbelievably great new album (and his eighth full-length)... with a fresh new label. "I'm psyched: I've wanted to be on Sub Pop since I was a teenager. And I think I'm the first fifty year-old they've ever signed." (The rumors are true, we love quinquagenarians...). When the Wind Forgets Your Name continues expanding the Built to Spill universe in new and exciting ways. In 2018 Martsch's good fortune and keen intuition brought him together with Brazilian lo-fi punk artist and producer Le Almeida, and his long-time collaborator, Joao Casaes, both of the psychedelic jazz rock band, Orua. Martsch fell in love with their music the moment he heard it. So when he needed a new band for shows in Brazil, he asked them, and the partnership went so well Martsch, Almeida, and Casaes continued playing together throughout 2019, touring the US and Europe and ultimately recording the bass and drum tracks for When the Wind Forgets Your Name at Doug's rehearsal space in Boise. After Martsch tracked guitars and vocals, they group collaborated from afar to mix the album. What emerged is When the Wind Forgets Your Name, a complex and cohesive blend of the artists' distinct musical ideas. Alongside Built to Spill's poetic lyrics and themes, the experimentation and attention to detail produces an album full of unique, vivid, and timeless sounds, from guitar-driven rock odes to REM and Dinosaur Jr to bluesy '60s-style anthems to dub-reggae-inspired instrumentation. It may have taken us 30 years of obvious fandom and courtship, but on September 9, 2022, Sub Pop Records is unabashedly proud to finally release an excellent new album from Built to Spill: When the Wind Forgets Your Name. It was written after Depression Cherry from July 2014 - November 2014 and recorded during the same session as Depression Cherry. The songs came together very quickly and were driven by the lyrics and the narrative. In this way, the record feels very new for us, and a great departure from our last few records. Thematically, this record often feels political. It’s hard to put it into words, but something about the record made us want to release it without the normal “campaign.” We wanted it to simply enter the world and exist.

Thank you very much,

Beach House”

Tracklist

Side A

1. Majorette

2. She's So Lovely

3. All Your Yeahs

4. One Thing

5. Common Girl

Side B

1. The Traveller

2. Elegy to the Void

3. Rough Song

4. Somewhere Tonight

UPC: 098787114249
Label: Sub Pop
Release Date: 1.29.16
Format: Cassette

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1041/7172/files/9069291405467-1-beachhousestars_1_3c55123c-4b6a-4d92-ac10-d73cfa9e0001.jpg?v=1779908878
iron-wine-our-endless-numbered-days-cassette
Iron & Wine – Our Endless Numbered Days (Cassette)

Our Endless Numbered Days is Iron & Wine's second full-length. At its release, we will have been a band for over 13 years. We have now written and released a total of 77 songs together.

Last year, we released an album of b-sides and rarities. It felt like a good step for us. It helped us clean the creative closet, put the past to bed, and start anew.

Throughout the process of recording 7, our goal was rebirth and rejuvenation. We wanted to rethink old methods and shed some self-imposed limitations. In the past, we often limited our writing to parts that we could perform live. On 7, we decided to follow whatever came naturally. As a result, there are some songs with no guitar, and some without keyboard. There are songs with layers and production that we could never recreate live, and that is exciting to us. Basically, we let our creative moods, instead of instrumentation, dictate the album's feel.

In the past, the economics of recording have dictated that we write for a year, go to the studio, and record the entire record as quickly as possible. We have always hated this because by the time the recording happens, a certain excitement about older songs has often been lost. This time, we built a "home" studio, and began all of the songs there. Whenever we had a group of 3-4 songs that we were excited about, we would go to a "proper" recording studio and finish recording them there. This way, the amount of time between the original idea and the finished song was pretty short (of the album's 11 songs, 8 were finished at Carriage House in Stamford, CT and 2 at Palmetto Studio in Los Angeles).

7 didn't have a producer in the traditional sense. We much preferred this, as it felt like the ideas drove the creativity, not any one person's process. James Barone, who became our live drummer in 2016, played on the entire record. His tastes and the trust we have in him really helped us keep rhythm at the center of a lot of these songs. We also worked with Sonic Boom (Peter Kember). Peter became a great force on this record, in the shedding of conventions and in helping to keep the songs alive, fresh and protected from the destructive forces of recording studio over-production/over-perfection.

The societal insanity of 2016-17 was also deeply influential, as it must be for most artists these days. Looking back, there is quite a bit of chaos happening in these songs, and a pervasive dark field that we had little control over. The discussions surrounding women's issues were a constant source of inspiration and questioning. The energy, lyrics and moods of much of this record grew from ruminations on the roles, pressures and conditions that our society places on women, past and present. The twisted double edge of glamour, with its perils and perfect moments, was an endless source (see "L'Inconnue," "Drunk in LA," "Woo," "Girl Of The Year," "Last Ride").

In a more general sense, we are interested by the human mind's (and nature's) tendency to create forces equal and opposite to those present. Thematically, this record often deals with the beauty that arises in dealing with darkness; the empathy and love that grows from collective trauma; the place one reaches when they accept rather than deny (see "Dark Spring," "Pay No Mind," "Lemon Glow," "Dive," "Black Car," "Lose Your Smile").

The title, 7, itself is simply a number that represents our seventh record. We hoped its simplicity would encourage people to look inside. No title using words that we could find felt like an appropriate summation of the album.

The number 7 does represent some interesting connections in numerology. 1 and 7 have always shared a common look, so 7 feels like the perfect step in the sequence to act as a restart or "semi-first." Most early religions also had a fascination with 7 as being the highest level of spirituality, as in "Seventh Heaven." At our best creative moments, we felt we were channeling some kind of heavy truth, and we sincerely hope the listeners will feel that.

Much Love,

Beach House

<div Shins – Oh, Inverted World: 20th Anniversary Remaster (Cassette)

Oh, Inverted World, the earth-shattering, indie-rock-redefining 2001 debut album by The Shins, is presented here in it's finest form, dressed up all nice for it's 20th birthday. The classic tunes get new life by way of a full remastering job under band leader James Mercer's watchful eye, the art is given a little extra zest via a die-cut jacket and a classy inner sleeve, and the package is rounded off with a big ol' booklet with vintage photos, handwritten lyrics, and more. The music, of course, is obviously essential. Aside from a friendly reminder that this is the album with the smash hit "New Slang," as heard in the hit movie Garden State, we just need to note that the remastering job truly makes this the album James Mercer always wanted it to be. Never quite satisfied with the sonics of the original, Mercer took the 20th anniversary of the album as his opportunity to finally set the (literal!) record straight. And the results sound stellar: great for new fans, and well worth the attention of those already on board! For old times' sake, here's what we had to say about this record back when it came out: Hailing from Albuquerque, NM, The Shins sprung from the ashes of Flake/Flake Music in 1997 (though those previous incarnations date back nearly a decade) - same members, different instruments, different approach. Counterpoint guitars have given way to a single guitar pitted against calculated keyboard passages; swarming indie rock machinations led to pop-based melodic endeavors (who knew?).

Tracklist

Side A

1. Caring Is Creepy (3:20)

2. One By One All Day (4:09)

3. Weird Divide (1:58)

4. Know Your Onion!
