Product Details

Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia in 1974, Young Americans marked Bowie's deep dive into American soul, drawing on the city's lush orchestral R&B tradition at a moment when that sound was at its commercial and creative peak. The sessions brought in a remarkable cast of collaborators, including Luther Vandross, then an unknown backup singer, whose presence on these recordings is one of those small-print details that only grows more remarkable in hindsight.

YOUNG AMERICANS will be issued as a limited-edition 50th-anniversary half-speed-mastered LP and a picture-disc LP with a poster pressed from the same master. The album saw Bowie broaden his musical horizons once more, embracing what he called 'Plastic Soul' and would give him his first number-one single in the U.S., 'FAME', co-written with John Lennon and his then-guitarist, Carlos Alomar.

This new pressing of YOUNG AMERICANS was cut on a customized late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics, using 192kHz-restored masters of the original Record Plant master tapes, with no additional processing during transfer. The half-speed was cut by John Webber at AIR Studios.
