Chicago's The Sea and Cake spent the early 2000s quietly refining one of indie rock's most distinctive sounds, blending post-bop sensibility with electronic texture in ways that owed as much to Brazilian tropicália and ECM jazz as to anything in the alternative canon. One Bedroom arrived at a moment when Sam Prekop, John McEntire, Archer Prewitt, and Eric Claridge had fully internalized those influences, producing something that felt both considered and completely natural.
