February 1969 found the Dead at one of their creative peaks, with the twin-drummer lineup of Hart and Kreutzmann locked in and Tom Constanten's keyboards adding psychedelic texture to a band still writing the rules of improvisational rock. The Fillmore East, Bill Graham's New York room, was one of the few stages in America that could hold what the Dead were becoming, and recordings from this run capture that electricity with rare immediacy.
