Recorded in the shadow of an unrealized Ziggy Stardust-era ambition to adapt George Orwell's *1984* for the stage, *Diamond Dogs* marked Bowie's first album without the Spiders from Mars, with Bowie himself handling much of the guitar work. The dystopian street-gang world he conjured here became one of glam rock's darkest and most fully realized visions, setting the stage for the soul-inflected reinvention that would follow on the 1974 tour.
