The first Drive-By Truckers album after Jason Isbell's departure could have been a retreat—instead, Brighter Than Creation's Dark found Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley deepening their partnership and expanding their sonic palette. Pedal steel, keyboards, and even Spooner Oldham's organ appear alongside the trademark guitar thunder, creating the band's most sonically ambitious album to that point. The double LP format showcases 19 songs that range from intimate country ballads to full-throttle rockers.

Hood and Cooley divide the album roughly equally, their contrasting personalities creating the tension that drives the band. Hood's songs tend toward the epic and narrative—tales of small-town drama and working-class struggle—while Cooley's are more compressed, his wit drier and his characters more resigned to their fates. Together they survey the post-Katrina South, the ongoing Iraq War, and the personal wreckage that accumulates over years of touring and hard living.
