Recorded in June 1964, "Cantaloupe Island" would go on to become one of the most sampled jazz compositions in hip-hop history, most famously when US3 flipped it for "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" in 1993. The rhythm section here, Carter and the then-17-year-old Tony Williams, represents one of the great underrated partnerships in acoustic jazz, and hearing it cut from the original tapes makes the case for why Blue Note's Classic Vinyl series exists in the first place.
