Neil Young with Crazy Horse – World Record (2-LP Vinyl)
Review
With a childlike sense of hope and Nils Lofgren’s piano and accordion prominent in the mix, Neil Young’s latest ride with Crazy Horse sounds more like a folksy solo album.
World Record finds Young ensconced in his ongoing trite-lyrics period as he writes lovely melodies to accompany tracks with such titles as “Love Earth,”“This Old Planet (Changing Days)” and “The World (Is in Trouble Now).”
“No more war/only love,” Young, Lofgren, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina sing in hushed harmony on the nursery-rhyme-like “Walkin’ on the Road (To the Future).”
Mellow vibes notwithstanding, the Horse still snorts on occasion, whether reprising “Welfare Mothers” on the call-and-response “Break the Chain;” channeling Pink Floyd on “I Walk with You (Earth Ringtone)” with its marching feet and sweeping guitar; or making the listener’s head snap toward the speaker with wildly abrasive solos on the 15-minute rubber-burner dubbed “Chevrolet.”
Young has been insanely prolific, if careless about quality control, in the 21st century. And while World Record isn’t destined to be a classic, it is Young’s strongest release since 2012’s Psychedelic Pill and an album that will remain on fans’ shelves long after Storytone, the Monsanto Years, Peace Trail, et. al fade into memory.

Product Details
Rick Rubin's Shangri-La studio has hosted some legendary sessions, but pairing him with Neil Young and Crazy Horse on analog tape feels almost cosmically logical. The warmth of vintage gear suits a band that has always played like they're trying to shake something loose, and the 3-sided vinyl configuration gives these songs the room they need to breathe.
Neil Young with Crazy Horse will release World Record on November 18, 2022. It's their second album of new studio recordings within the past 12 months.
World Record is produced by Rick Rubin and Neil Young, and Neil is accompanied by his longtime band, Crazy Horse (Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina, Nils Lofgren). The album features 10 new Neil Young compositions (plus a short reprise of one song) and was mixed to analog tape at Rubin’s Shangri-la studios using a selection of vintage instruments and equipment.
To optimize the audio quality, the vinyl format will be released as a 3-sided double album with an etching on side 4. There will also be a limited-edition version of the album pressed on clear vinyl available at indie retailers. 'World Record' will also be released on CD (2 CDs mirroring the track sequence of the double LP) and cassette.
World Record contains ten songs, nine written during the last year about the events and condition of our world.
