Product Details

Henry Roeland Byrd, the man New Orleans called Professor Longhair, was the foundational architect of everything the city's piano tradition became, the rolling left-hand bass and Caribbean-inflected rhythms that shaped Fats Domino, Dr. John, and Allen Toussaint before any of them cut a record. Captured just a few years before his celebrated comeback at the 1974 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, these sessions document Fink at a moment when the wider world had largely forgotten him, making the music inside all the more urgent and alive.

Studio recordings from Baton Rouge and Memphis from 1971 and 1972. Unreleased until 1991, this is the album's first appearance on LP.
