Product Details

Jazz clarinetist Tony Scott had already logged time with Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker before recording this session in Japan, a career pivot that surprised the jazz world but reflected his longstanding interest in Eastern philosophy and music. Released on Verve, it stands as one of the earliest cross-cultural collaborations between a prominent American jazz musician and traditional Japanese instrumentalists, arriving years before such meetings became fashionable.

Vinyl LP pressing. Mostly improvised by clarinetist Scott, backed by Hozan Yamamoto and Shinichi Yuize - on the Japanese instruments shakuhachi and koto - this 1964 album is a precursor to later movements in ambient and new age music, from in and out of the jazz world.
