Ten days after this session was recorded, Scott LaFaro was killed in a car accident at age 25, making these Village Vanguard recordings among the most bittersweet documents in jazz history. The interplay between Evans and LaFaro captured here redefined what a piano trio could be, with the bass functioning as a true melodic equal rather than a timekeeper.
