Recorded in 1982 after founding synth player Vince Clarke's departure, A Broken Frame found the remaining trio navigating a genuine crossroads, with Martin Gore stepping fully into the role of principal songwriter. The album's cold, pastoral textures and Gore's emerging emotional directness pointed toward the darker, more commanding sound Depeche Mode would spend the next decade perfecting.
