Donald Byrd – Free Form (CD)

Donald Byrd recorded *Free Form* in 1961 at the peak of his hard bop prime, but the album leaned deliberately into post-bop exploration, with Wayne Shorter contributing both his saxophone voice and two original compositions to the session. That combination of Byrd's warm, precise trumpet and Shorter's already-distinctive writing made this date something more forward-looking than a typical Blue Note hard bop entry, a small-group record that rewards patient listeners who follow the lineage from bebop toward what jazz would become.
