Mac Rebennack had been a fixture of the New Orleans session scene for years before reinventing himself as Dr. John the Night Tripper, a character steeped in Crescent City voodoo mythology and street mysticism. Gris-Gris arrived in 1968 as something genuinely strange and unclassifiable, drawing on Mardi Gras Indian chant, bayou funk, and the occult traditions of Louisiana folk culture in ways that had no real precedent in American popular music.

Gris-Gris is the debut album by Dr. John (Mac Rebennack). Produced by Harold Battiste, it was released on Atco Records in 1968. The musical style of Gris-Gris is a hybrid of New Orleans rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock. Despite the New Orleans style, it was recorded in California, albeit with several native New Orleans musicians.
